Argentina's Dramatic Win and Switzerland's Penalty Triumph Propel Them to World Cup Quarterfinals

The World Cup advanced to the quarter-finals after Argentina overcame a tough start against Egypt. The South American giants found themselves trailing by two goals but managed an impressive turnaround to secure their place in the next round.

Egypt took the lead early, with Yasser Ibrahim scoring from a corner in the 15th minute. Argentina’s chance to equalize came soon after when Nico Tagliafico was fouled inside the box, awarding Lionel Messi a penalty. However, Egypt’s goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir correctly guessed the direction and denied Messi’s attempt.

Egypt appeared to double their advantage when Mostafa Ziko finished a swift counter-attack during the second half. This goal was disallowed after VAR identified a foul on Lisandro Martinez at the beginning of the move. Ziko later scored again on a similar counter-attack that stood.

Despite struggling for much of the match, Argentina intensified their pressure in the final 20 minutes. Cristian Romero reduced the deficit in the 79th minute, heading in a cross from Messi. Soon after, Messi himself scored the equalizer with a powerful shot following a loose ball, sending the game toward extra time.

In extra time, Lautaro Martinez delivered a floating cross for Enzo Fernandez, who headed home the winner. The goal sparked emotional celebrations, with Messi visibly moved by the victory. Although Argentina was expected to have an easier path, challenges from Cape Verde and Egypt made their journey far more demanding and thrilling than anticipated.

Switzerland Edges Colombia in Penalty Shootout After Tense Match

The Switzerland versus Colombia match took a different pace, with both teams appearing cautious and seemingly preparing for a penalty shootout. The game, held in Vancouver, was relatively subdued, with few clear chances during regular time.

Colombia held the upper hand in opportunities, especially in extra time, outshooting Switzerland 8-1 in the final 30 minutes. Despite this dominance, Colombia failed to score, which proved costly once the match moved to penalties.

Davinson Sanchez missed his penalty, striking the crossbar. Manuel Akanji also missed his for Switzerland, shooting over the bar. Juan Hernandez’s effort for Colombia was saved by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, while Cedric Itten and Luis Diaz exchanged successful penalties. Ruben Vargas then converted the decisive kick, sending Murat Yakin’s team through to the quarter-finals.
