Xabi Alonso Clarifies Enzo Fernandez's Omission from Chelsea's Squad

Xabi Alonso insists Chelsea’s call to leave Enzo Fernandez out of the squad at Luton was a joint decision between him and the club – and not a player power move amid growing Manchester City interest.

Fernandez, who came off the bench in Monday night’s Premier League opener against Fulham, did not even travel as a substitute as Chelsea eased past Jack Wilshere’s League One side 2-0. A debut strike from Danny Welbeck and a late own goal forced by Estevao settled it, but the real noise came from the name missing on the teamsheet.

City are understood to be lining up a bid to take the Argentina international to the Etihad Stadium before the transfer window shuts, reuniting him with former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca. With the deadline looming at 11pm BST on Tuesday, the 25-year-old’s absence felt like the strongest sign yet that a move could be edging closer.

Alonso pushed back on that narrative.

“We assess individually, collectively, what's the best for the team, for tonight, what was better for other players that were playing and we take the decision,” he said when pressed on Fernandez’s omission.

Reports in Argentina had claimed Fernandez asked not to feature against Luton. Alonso was blunt in response.

“No, it was a decision from myself and from the club.”

The Chelsea head coach also denied that the midfielder was left out because talks with City had accelerated in the background.

“No, it's just because of the game today and we had other players that needed minutes and it was that way,” he insisted.

The call, Alonso revealed, came late. He decided to drop Fernandez on Wednesday afternoon, after a press conference in which he had publicly expected the World Cup winner to play some part at Kenilworth Road.

“It's a decision that I took,” Alonso said, declining to spell out whether he had spoken directly to Fernandez about it.

“He’s a good professional. He’s training well and I have nothing to say about him. It was just a decision that we had to take, thinking about the game that we're playing tonight and we'll see for Sunday [against Brighton].”

For now, Chelsea maintain it was just rotation, just minutes to manage. The clock, and Manchester City, may soon test how long that line holds.
