Xabi Alonso Urges Quick Resolution on Enzo Fernández Saga

Xabi Alonso wants the Enzo Fernández saga settled – and quickly.

Manchester City are weighing up a fresh move for the Argentina international after letting Chelsea’s £120m deadline come and go, and the uncertainty has hovered over Stamford Bridge all summer.

Fernández was heavily linked with Real Madrid earlier in the window, only for the European champions to cool their interest and step away from the noise. That opened the door for Enzo Maresca’s City, who have monitored the midfielder while juggling their own business and budget.

Chelsea drew a line in the sand two weeks ago, setting a firm price and a cut-off point for any club willing to pay it. City did not bite. Now, new reports suggest they are readying another offer anyway, testing just how rigid that stance really is.

In the meantime, life – and pre-season planning – has had to go on for Alonso.

The World Cup winner is back in full training and, crucially, back in the matchday squad. He started on the bench for Chelsea’s Premier League opener on Monday night but was sent on in the 65th minute, helping the Blues close out a 3-2 win. His involvement underlined one thing: for now, Alonso is preparing as if Fernández will be part of his midfield.

Pressed after the final whistle on whether that will still be the case when the window shuts, Alonso could not offer any guarantees, only a manager’s blunt realism.

“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”

That is the tightrope Chelsea are walking: build a team around a player who could yet be prised away, or cash in and reshape the squad on the fly.

What is clear is that the London club are now pivoting hard towards outgoings. Liam Delap is in talks over a move to Nottingham Forest, while Mamadou Sarr is also close to the exit. Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu are all being lined up for departures as well, either on loan or on permanent deals, as Chelsea trim numbers and wages. Dario Essugo has been made available for a loan move too.

So the picture is shifting quickly. City deliberate. Chelsea offload. Alonso waits.

The next bid – or the lack of one – will decide whether Fernández becomes the centrepiece of Maresca’s new project, or the cornerstone of Alonso’s.
