Yan Diomande never hid his dream – and it was not Anfield.

Real Madrid’s new forward, signed in a deal that could rise to £120 million, has long been linked with Liverpool, but the Ivorian’s camp has now made it clear: his heart was set on the Santiago Bernabeu.

Reports from the Liverpool Echo revealed that Liverpool were prepared to go big, putting £86 million on the table for the RB Leipzig attacker. It was a serious move from a club looking to refresh its forward line.

Leipzig, though, pushed back. The Bundesliga side valued Diomande at more than £100 million. Once it became clear that the player himself preferred a switch to European champions Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool stepped away from the negotiations.

Earlier this month, the Spanish giants struck an agreement worth up to £120 million, seizing a player whose stock has been rising at speed and whose ambition, as it turns out, aligned perfectly with the club’s own.

Behind the scenes, Diomande’s camp had been working with a very specific target in mind.

Michael Yormark, co-founder of the Roc Nation agency that represents the forward, lifted the lid on the conversations that shaped the transfer.

“Nathan Campbell, Diomande’s agent, sat down with the Ivorian player, and they talked about his dreams and ambitions,” Yormark said.

According to Yormark, Diomande did not hesitate when asked what he wanted from his career: “I want to be the best player in the world, I want to win the Ballon d’Or, and I want to win titles, and my biggest dream has always been to play for Real Madrid.”

Those words framed the entire strategy. The agency knew exactly where the end point had to be.

“We had to put in place the right plan to achieve his dream. We built a team around this young player. This deal represents a big moment for all of us too. We took an ambitious young man and turned his ambition into reality,” Yormark explained.

A record for Africa – and a statement from Roc Nation

For Roc Nation, Diomande’s move is more than another high-profile transfer. It is a landmark.

Nathan Campbell, head of global talent recruitment in football at the agency and the man directly overseeing the player’s career, underlined what the agreement with Real Madrid represents.

Speaking to SportsBoom.co.za, Campbell described it as a reflection of Diomande’s relentless drive: “This historic deal with Real Madrid is a testament to the incredible work ethic that Yan possesses.”

He did not shy away from the scale of the moment either. The transfer stands as the biggest deal for an African player in football history.

“We could not be prouder to have contributed to the completion of the biggest transfer deal for an African player in the history of football,” Campbell stressed.

Liverpool made their move. PSG circled. But Diomande’s path, mapped out in those early conversations about dreams and ambition, was always leading to one place: the Bernabeu, and a shot at the very top of the game.
