Youri Tielemans Apologizes to Aston Villa Fans After Controversial Comments

Youri Tielemans has moved quickly to repair relations with Aston Villa supporters after comments about his transfer to Manchester United sparked a backlash.

The Belgium midfielder, who left Villa for Old Trafford this summer, appeared to rank his new club above his former side during United’s pre-season tour. United activated a £35m release clause in his contract to sign the 29-year-old on a five-year deal.

Tielemans, who joined Villa from Leicester City in 2023, rebuilt his reputation in three seasons at Villa Park, making 134 appearances and scoring 10 goals. He acknowledged that in his initial remarks, praising Villa for restoring his level.

"Villa put me back to my best level," he said on tour, before adding the line that lit the fuse: "But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them."

Those words did not sit well in Birmingham. Sections of the Villa fanbase voiced their anger, accusing the midfielder of disrespecting a club that had backed him through a crucial stage of his career.

Tielemans responded on Thursday, using Instagram to clarify his stance and issue an apology.

"Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years," he wrote.

"I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future.

"Wishing the club the best in the future."

A messy soundbite, a swift climbdown, and a reminder that in the modern game, a transfer rarely ends the conversation.
