Youri Tielemans Faces Backlash for Aston Villa Comments

Youri Tielemans did not need long to discover that leaving Aston Villa is one thing. Ranking them is quite another.

The 29-year-old midfielder, now a Manchester United player after a £35 million move earlier this summer, walked straight into a storm of his own making during United’s pre-season tour when a seemingly routine reflection on his Villa spell veered into a direct comparison that enraged his former fanbase.

“There are clubs above Villa…”

Tielemans had initially spoken warmly about his time at Villa Park, crediting the club with helping him regain rhythm and confidence after arriving from Leicester City in the summer of 2023. Across 134 appearances, he delivered 10 goals and 25 assists, becoming a central figure in Unai Emery’s evolving side.

Then came the line that lit the fuse.

Speaking to the press, the Belgium international said: “But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.”

In isolation, it was a blunt assessment of English football’s traditional hierarchy. In the context of Villa’s recent surge under Emery, it sounded like a dismissal. This is a club that lifted the UEFA Europa League last season and finished fourth in the Premier League to secure a place in the upcoming UEFA Champions League. A club that feels it is climbing, not looking up.

Villa supporters did not take kindly to being told there are “clubs above” them by a player who had only just walked out the door.

Damage control on social media

Tielemans moved quickly to stem the backlash. Turning to social media, he issued a public apology and tried to reframe his comments, stressing that his intention had not been to belittle Aston Villa or its supporters.

“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote. “I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future. Wishing the club the best in the future.”

No excuses, no attempt to hide behind context. Just an admission that he had misjudged the tone at a time when emotions around Villa’s rise are understandably raw.

From key man at Villa to United’s next project

The apology arrives only weeks after United triggered a release clause in his Villa contract to take him to Old Trafford on a five-year deal, tying him down until 2031. For Tielemans, it is a landmark move, the kind of transfer he has long been linked with but only now secured.

His final season at Villa was far from straightforward. Calf and ankle problems disrupted his campaign, restricting him to 35 appearances in all competitions. Even so, when fit, he remained an important cog in Emery’s midfield, trusted in high-stakes European and domestic fixtures.

United are betting that those fitness issues are behind him and that the player who once dictated games for Leicester and helped drive Villa into Europe can now bring control and creativity to Erik ten Hag’s engine room.

World Cup platform, new season ahead

Tielemans arrives in Manchester off the back of a strong summer with Belgium. He featured at the World Cup, helping his country reach the quarter-finals before they were knocked out by Spain. On an individual level, he impressed, scoring twice in the Round of 32 against Senegal and reminding Europe’s elite of his ability to influence big matches.

Now, with pre-season entering its final stretch, the noise around his comments threatens to overshadow the football. United face AC Milan in their final warm-up game, and Tielemans will be desperate to shift the narrative from soundbites to performances, to let his passing and positional play speak louder than one ill-judged sentence.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, have their own reset to manage. Emery’s side slipped to a 2–1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup, a reminder of the thin margins at the top level after a season of almost uninterrupted ascent.

Their response will come quickly. Villa open their Premier League campaign away at Brighton on August 23, eager to prove that last season’s success was not a one-off surge but the start of something lasting. Manchester United begin a day earlier, travelling to Hull City on August 22, with Tielemans hoping that by then, the only hierarchy anyone is talking about is the one in the league table.
