Zamalek Reclaims Top Spot with Victory Over Abu Qir

Zamalek did not dazzle. They did something more important on a tense Tuesday night at Cairo Stadium: they won, and they climbed back to the top of the Egyptian Premier League table, at least for now.

A 2-0 victory over newly promoted Abu Qir Fertilizers sounds routine on paper. It was anything but. The champions were pushed, stretched, and outplayed in long spells by a side still finding its feet in the top flight.

Abu Qir edged possession with 53 percent of the ball and outshot Zamalek 13–8. They came to the capital to compete, not to survive. For long periods, they dictated the rhythm.

Zamalek, though, struck first.

Ismail’s thunderbolt settles early nerves

Seventeen minutes in, the champions found a moment of clarity amid the early uncertainty. Mahmoud Abdel Rahim "Genesh" rushed off his line to close down Mahmoud Bentayg, but the ball broke loose. It dropped invitingly for Mohamed Ismail, who did not hesitate.

He lashed a ferocious volley into the unguarded net. One touch, one statement. 1-0, and Cairo Stadium finally exhaled.

The goal did not break Abu Qir’s spirit. They kept the ball, probed the flanks, and forced Zamalek to retreat deeper than they would have liked. The White Knights, for all their pedigree, looked uncomfortable without control.

Yet when the pressure rose, the back line held. Just.

Debash’s goal-line heroics

The defining defensive moment arrived in the 69th minute. Abu Qir worked the ball wide, Omar Gaber whipped in a dangerous cross, and Oday Dabbagh pounced, steering it goalward. For a split second, the equaliser seemed inevitable.

Mohamed Debash had other ideas. Reading the danger, he dropped back and hooked the ball off the line with a superb last-ditch clearance. It was as good as a goal at the other end, a piece of defending that kept Zamalek’s fragile lead intact.

That escape jolted the champions. The game, which had been drifting towards a nervy finale, suddenly sharpened. Zamalek began to play with more urgency, more bite in the duels, more care in possession.

Abu Qir, chasing an equaliser, pushed higher. The space they left behind would cost them.

Sherif steps off the bench to finish the job

Three minutes from the end of normal time, the contest was finally killed. Substitute Ahmed Sherif, drifting into the penalty area unmarked, spotted Genesh off his line. With composure that belied the tension, he lifted the ball delicately over the goalkeeper.

2-0. Game over. A clinical finish from a player who had barely been on the pitch long enough to break a sweat.

The scoreline flattered Zamalek, but the points were all that mattered. The champions moved to 10 points, provisionally top of the league after four rounds, awaiting the rest of the week’s fixtures.

Their cushion is slim. Pyramids, Al-Ahly and Ceramica Cleopatra all sit just a point behind, and both the Sky Blues and the Reds have a game in hand, having played only three matches so far.

Still, the numbers favour Zamalek early in the campaign: three wins from four, with victories over Al-Bank Al-Ahly and Suez Petrojet joining this latest success. The only blemish remains the opening-day draw against Al-Ittihad Al-Sakandary.

Abu Qir’s slide continues

For Abu Qir Fertilizers, there was credit in the performance but nothing in the standings. They stay stuck on three points in 15th place after a third straight defeat, a harsh reflection of a side that pushed the champions harder than many expected.

Dominance in phases, chances created, but no reward. In a league this unforgiving, that pattern cannot continue for long.

Zamalek, meanwhile, now split their focus. They travel to face Djibouti's Port on Saturday in the second leg of the African Champions League preliminary round, aiming to secure safe passage before returning to domestic duty.

Then comes a tricky league trip to Ghazl El Mahalla on 16 September.

Top of the table for now, juggling Africa and the league, and already being hunted by Pyramids and Al-Ahly: Zamalek have their familiar target on their back again. How long they keep it there will define their season.
