Zian Flemming's Exciting Return to the Premier League with Ipswich

Zian Flemming walked into Ipswich Town with a grin that gave him away before he said a word. This is a man who has already tasted the Premier League – and is desperate for another bite.

The 28-year-old forward, a £20m deadline-day signing from Burnley, could make his debut on Friday night under the Portman Road lights against Liverpool. No gentle easing-in, no soft launch. Straight into the deep end.

"For me it's just pure excitement," he told reporters on Thursday, the day before Ipswich’s return to the top flight collides with one of its most formidable forces.

Flemming knows exactly what he has signed up for. Last season he scored 11 league goals for Burnley, a personal success story buried inside a relegation campaign. He proved he belonged in the division. His team did not survive it.

"Last season I managed to come out on top of the personal challenge to become a Premier League player but lost out on the team challenge and stay in the league," he said. The words are calm. The message is not. He wants both this time.

"When the move was getting closer and I really looked at the schedule and realised we were playing Liverpool on Friday I thought, 'yeah, I'm really back in the Prem!'.

"That's what you want, to play against the best teams and best players," Flemming said. That is where his enthusiasm spikes. He talks about testing himself, being pushed, finding another level. Last year, even in the struggle, that part thrilled him.

"That's what gave me so much joy and excitement last year, to be able to measure yourself against the very best and have them push you to the next level. I can't wait to do that again and experience that again."

He frames football as a series of challenges – some personal, some collective – and he leans into both.

"I just get a sensation of excitement for challenges. Whether it's a personal or a team challenge it brings something to life inside of me to take it on."

The metaphor he chooses for his new start is telling. It is not about comfort or security. It is about the climb.

"I'd like to be at the bottom of the mountain and look up and wonder what it is like at the top. Then, get my head down and see how far I can get and see whether I can reach the top."

Ipswich stand at the foot of that mountain now, back in the Premier League and staring up at giants. On Friday night, against Liverpool, Flemming will find out just how steep that first step really is.
