2026 Changes to International Soccer Breaks: When Is the Next One?

The upcoming international break starts on September 21, 2026 and runs through October 6, 2026. This stretch lasts 16 days, allowing national teams to schedule up to four matches during this period.

Why September and October Breaks Were Combined

Historically, FIFA set aside separate one-week breaks in September and October for international matches. In 2026, this has changed considerably.

Because the 2026 World Cup expanded to 48 teams and lasted six weeks over the summer, FIFA decided to merge the September and October breaks into a single extended window. This adjustment aims to give players more time to recover and reintegrate with their club sides before resuming international duties.

This two-week combined break will also let national team coaches spend more quality time with their squads, offering a rare chance to work closely on tactics and team cohesion.

What About November?

The usual international break in November remains intact. From November 9 to November 17, 2026, national teams worldwide will gather to play up to two matches.
