2026 World Cup: Third-Place Qualifiers and Round of 32 Match-Ups

The 2026 World Cup group stage is wrapping up, introducing a new knockout phase featuring 32 teams for the first time. Alongside group winners and runners-up, the eight best third-placed teams will also move forward. This change has made the path to the round of 32 more complex. Here, you can track which third-placed nations currently qualify and what their potential match-ups look like.

Ranking Criteria for Third-Placed Teams

The ranking of these third-placed teams depends mainly on points earned during the group stage. If teams tie, goal difference and goals scored are used next, following rules similar to the Bundesliga. Fair play points come after, with deductions for yellow and red cards affecting rankings. If equality remains, FIFA World Rankings serve as the final decider.

How the Round of 32 Shapes Up

Because there are 48 teams, FIFA has outlined 495 possible scenarios that determine which eight third-placed teams advance. A computer system handles this, ensuring no teams face each other again too soon if they met in the group stage. The bracket lists multiple possible opponents for each third-placed team, especially relevant for Germany. They could face third-placed teams from Groups A, B, C, D, or F. Right now, Germany is most likely to meet the third-placed team from Group C or D.
