Alvarez's Absence Stirs Controversy Among Atletico Fans
Alvarez never set foot on the pitch. He never even appeared on the bench. Yet his name echoed around the Metropolitano all night.
As Atletico Madrid eased to a routine 2-0 win over Malaga, the glaring omission from Diego Simeone’s squad dominated the conversation in the stands. The match felt straightforward; the situation around the Argentine forward did not.
Hostile soundtrack for an absent star
Every time his name was mentioned, the reaction was the same: whistles, jeers, and cutting chants from a section of the home crowd. Alvarez may have stayed away, but the anger stayed very close.
The frustration stems from his comments during the recent World Cup, when he openly requested a move away from Atletico. For many supporters, that crossed a line. On this evidence, they have no intention of quietly moving on.
A “small but vocal” group led the hostility, but their mood set the tone. The game on the pitch belonged to Atletico’s current XI; the noise in the stands circled relentlessly around the player who wasn’t there.
Simeone backs the fans – and keeps the door open
Simeone faced the issue head-on after the final whistle. Asked about the negative reception aimed at his absent striker, the Atletico coach backed the supporters and doubled down on his long-standing stance on transfers.
"I have great respect for our people," he said. "We are open – as we always say – to specific possibilities. You know this after 15 years, I always say that until the window closes, I am open to anything that might happen. That doesn't mean I'm talking about any specific individual, is that clear?"
The message was sharp. Respect for the fans. Flexibility in the market. No direct public defence of Alvarez.
Simeone didn’t offer clarity on whether the forward will stay or go, but he did make one thing crystal clear: his priority is the strength of the squad, not the status of any single player.
"Right, I’ve always said this, and not just now," he continued. "We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had. And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline."
A decisive stretch of the window
So Atletico leave with three points and a clean sheet, but also with a problem that refuses to disappear. The club now has to steer through the final days of the transfer window while trying to defuse a growing disconnect between Alvarez and a fanbase that once idolised him.
Does he stay and attempt to repair the damage? Or does the club cut ties and reinvest, as Simeone hints he is ready to do?
Those answers will arrive soon enough. The clock is ticking, the window is closing, and Villarreal visit the Metropolitano on Sunday. The team will prepare for another league test. The question is whether Alvarez will still be part of Atletico’s plans when that whistle blows – or just another name for the crowd to whistle.
