Inter Milan Signs Curtis Jones for $40 Million
Inter Milan have struck a deal worth about $40 million to sign Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, prising a homegrown talent away from Anfield as both clubs reset ahead of the new season.
Multiple outlets, including The Athletic, ESPN and Sky Sports, reported on Thursday that the clubs have agreed terms for the 25-year-old, who had just one year left on his Liverpool contract. Final details and formalities are expected to follow, but the agreement marks a significant move for both player and club.
Jones, a boyhood Red who broke into the senior side in 2019, leaves with a substantial body of work behind him. Across 228 appearances for Liverpool, he produced 22 goals and 22 assists, often shuttling between roles in midfield and attacking areas as managers leaned on his versatility.
Last season underlined his growing importance. Jones made 49 appearances in all competitions in 2025-26, contributing three goals and three assists. He became a regular part of the rotation, trusted in high-tempo games and European nights alike, even if he never quite nailed down undisputed starter status.
The last few weeks told a different story. Jones sat out Liverpool’s final two pre-season friendlies, both Sunday fixtures, against Como and Monaco. His absence from those matches sharpened speculation that negotiations were advanced and that Liverpool were preparing for life without him.
For Inter, this is a statement signing. A 25-year-old English midfielder entering his prime, battle-tested in the Premier League and Europe, arriving for a fee that reflects both his experience and remaining upside. Simone Inzaghi gains a player comfortable on the half-turn, able to press aggressively and link play between the lines — qualities that fit neatly into Inter’s high-intensity structure.
Liverpool, meanwhile, cash in before Jones could leave on a free next summer. The fee strengthens their hand in reshaping a midfield that has already undergone heavy surgery in recent windows. It also underlines a hard-nosed reality: even local products with deep roots at Anfield can be moved on when the balance of contract, age and squad needs demands it.
The timing is sharp. Liverpool open their Premier League campaign on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. EDT away to Newcastle in what already feels like a tone-setting fixture for their season. Jones will not be part of that journey, his path now pointing toward Serie A.
Inter’s own campaign begins even sooner. They host Monza on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in Milan, and the San Siro crowd will be eager to see how quickly their new midfielder can be integrated into a side with domestic and European ambitions.
One club loses a homegrown pillar of its depth chart. Another gains a ready-made contributor for a title push. The only question now is how quickly Curtis Jones can turn a $40 million gamble into a driving force in Inter’s midfield.
