Alvaro Arbeloa Targets Cesar Palacios for Fulham

Alvaro Arbeloa is wasting no time putting his stamp on Fulham. And, true to type, his eyes are fixed firmly on Valdebebas.

The former Real Madrid defender, now in charge at Craven Cottage, has turned again to the club’s academy, with Cesar Palacios emerging as his latest target. According to reports in Spain, Arbeloa has asked Fulham’s hierarchy to explore a deal for the Castilla attacking midfielder as he starts to shape his first Premier League squad.

A talent on the move

Palacios is officially in Real Madrid’s first-team pre-season group, but few inside the club expect him to stay there once the real business begins. At 21, he is at the stage where training with stars is no longer enough. He needs minutes.

Earlier in the summer, those minutes looked set to come in Serie A. Palacios reached a verbal agreement with Como, and both his camp and the Italian club believed the deal was on the brink of completion. The framework was there. The project was sold. Then it collapsed before pen ever touched paper.

That failure has reopened the market. FC Porto and Osasuna have since registered their interest, testing the waters without yet diving in. None of those talks has advanced to the point of a concrete agreement.

So Palacios is back at Valdebebas, working under the Real Madrid badge, but knowing his future almost certainly lies elsewhere. He and the club are now weighing up his next step with care, aware that this move could define the next phase of his career.

Arbeloa’s project – and a familiar face

This is where Arbeloa comes in. He knows exactly what he would be getting.

Palacios is not just another name on a scouting list. Arbeloa has already coached him at Castilla and worked with him around the Real Madrid first team. It was Arbeloa who handed the young midfielder his senior debut for Los Blancos in January, a moment that opened the door to seven first-team appearances in total.

That trust matters. For a 21-year-old considering a leap to the Premier League, the prospect of reuniting with a coach who has already backed him, already understood his game, carries real weight.

The reality at the Santiago Bernabeu is harsher. With Real Madrid stacked in attacking areas and competition for places relentless, regular senior minutes for Palacios look remote. His contract runs until 2027, which gives Madrid leverage but also underlines the likelihood of a strategic move now, whether on loan or in a permanent deal with protections.

From Arbeloa’s perspective, the equation is simple: Fulham need quality and energy between the lines; Palacios needs a platform. The Spanish coach has made it clear to the club’s hierarchy that he wants Fulham to move.

Not just Palacios on the list

Palacios is part of a broader pattern rather than a one-off punt. Arbeloa is leaning heavily on what he knows best.

Gonzalo Garcia and Franco Mastantuono are also on his radar, two more highly regarded youngsters from the Real Madrid system whom he has flagged to Fulham’s recruitment team. The idea is obvious: surround himself with players who understand his demands and style, while giving Fulham access to elite-level talent that might otherwise be out of reach.

There is, however, a new voice at the Bernabeu that will shape what happens next.

Jose Mourinho, back at Real Madrid and now Arbeloa’s successor, wants to take a close look at these youngsters during pre-season before signing off on any departures. For Palacios, Garcia and Mastantuono, that means every training session and friendly carries extra weight. Impress, and they might force a rethink. Fall short, and the exit door opens wider.

For Fulham and Arbeloa, the window is clear but narrow. If Mourinho decides these players are surplus to immediate requirements, the London club will be ready. If he doesn’t, Arbeloa will have to look elsewhere for the familiar faces he wants to build his new era around.
