Carlo Ancelotti Supports Neymar’s World Cup Selection as Brazil Legend Retires

Carlo Ancelotti, Brazil’s head coach, has spoken out about Neymar’s retirement from international football and why he chose to include the veteran forward in the 2026 World Cup lineup despite injury setbacks. The Italian coach admitted frustration over Neymar’s physical condition but stressed that having the star on the team was important for Brazil.

Standing by Neymar’s Inclusion

After a 16-year career with Brazil, 34-year-old Neymar officially announced his international retirement following Brazil's round of 16 exit against Norway. Even with the early departure from the tournament, Ancelotti insisted that Neymar deserved his place on the squad that traveled to North America.

Concerns Over Fitness and Preparation

Ancelotti acknowledged the difficulties Neymar faced with his fitness, especially due to a grade 2 calf strain that kept him out of Brazil’s first group stage matches against Morocco and Haiti.

"I think he didn’t contribute on a technical level as it was hoped he could, because he couldn’t," Ancelotti told ESPN. "But, in terms of attitude, it was a very positive attitude. I have a lot of affection for him, I thanked him for his attitude, for his behavior, and I think it was the right decision to include him on the 26-man roster."

Although he praised Neymar's leadership and professionalism off the pitch, Ancelotti admitted disappointment that Neymar wasn’t physically ready at the start of the tournament.

"The only thing that bothered me is that Neymar could have prepared himself better during that lead-up period," Ancelotti said. "He could have been ready for game one instead of game four. That was the only disappointing part."

Looking Ahead to a New Generation

With Neymar stepping away, Ancelotti plans a full rebuild for Brazil ahead of the 2030 World Cup. This marks a shift in focus from relying on stars of the 2010s to bringing in fresh talent.

"I think that players like Neymar, who already commented yesterday, and with all due respect to his decision. I believe that in history, one generation ends and another has to come, and it has to be better than the last one," said the former Real Madrid manager.

Other Veterans May Also Step Aside

Neymar isn’t the only established player expected to retire soon. When asked about the futures of Casemiro, Danilo, and Alex Sandro, Ancelotti gave a straightforward answer about the aging squad.

"I think so. It is a period that is coming to an end. Obviously, we have to thank all of them, and I have a lot of affection for all of them. But I think the idea that a player over 30 is done means that we have to think about the future.... Some of these players will be there, obviously. Marquinhos, for example. Alisson, we’ll see."
