Inter's Josep Martinez Confident in Italy’s Potential to Bounce Back After World Cup Setbacks
Josep Martinez, goalkeeper for Inter Milan, has expressed strong faith in Italy's ability to recover from the disappointment of missing three consecutive World Cups. The Spanish keeper sees great promise within Gli Azzurri as they work under Roberto Mancini to rebuild their squad and regain confidence.
Quality Remains Despite Recent Struggles
Martinez believes that the challenges faced by Italian football on the international stage are more about mindset than a drop in talent. The failure to qualify for the last three World Cups shook the team’s confidence deeply. Now, Mancini is leading a new generation of young players aiming to reshape Italy’s style and identity.
The Inter goalkeeper, having shared the pitch with some of Italy’s best Serie A talents, emphasized the technical strengths still present in the team. In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, he stated:
"Honestly, I see a lot of potential in Italy. They need to rediscover a defined playing model, but there’s no lack of quality. There are several high-level Inter players and many other valid elements with them. They need to regain confidence after the disappointment of missing the World Cup; for me, it’s more a mental thing than a quality issue."
Martinez Returns to International Duty with Spain
While discussing Italy, Martinez also marked a personal achievement. He recently received a recall to the Spain national team for the first time since his only senior cap in June 2021. An injury to Joan Garcia opened a spot alongside goalkeepers David Raya and Unai Simon, allowing Martinez to rejoin Luis de la Fuente’s squad.
Upcoming Test Against France
Italy's new lineup faces a critical challenge on Friday at the Stade de France. They will take on France in the UEFA Nations League Group A1. Mancini’s tactical approach will be crucial to countering the threat posed by the French team, now led by Zinedine Zidane. A good result in Paris could boost morale and keep Italy’s hopes alive for progressing to the knockout rounds.
