Francesco Totti Claims Italy's 2006 World Cup Win Owed to Him
Roma icon Francesco Totti recently made a bold statement, insisting that Italy would not have clinched the 2006 World Cup without his critical role and tournament-leading four assists. The former playmaker reflected on the tournament, his struggles with injury, and how the victory shaped his legacy.
Totti’s Reflection on His Career and 2006 Triumph
Known for his loyalty to Roma, Totti believes the World Cup win was what truly propelled him onto the global stage. Celebrating his 50th birthday in an interview with Corriere dello Sport, he revealed how lifting the trophy transformed him from a local hero into an international football legend.
His Take on the Final and Contribution
He confidently claimed that his spot in Marcello Lippi’s squad was key to Italy’s success. Totti joked, “If I hadn’t played, they wouldn’t have won it.” He added that the World Cup gave him the strength to be recognized beyond Rome. Despite playing at only 40 percent fitness, due to a serious ankle injury, he still made a significant impact. Totti pointed out that many players never get the chance to win a World Cup.
Battle with Injury During the Tournament
Totti fractured his left ankle in February 2006 and needed emergency surgery. Racing against time, he struggled to regain full fitness before the summer event. Even so, he started six of Italy’s seven matches, scoring once and assisting four times – the highest assist tally of the tournament. Reflecting on his prime years, he said, “Between 2001 and 2008, I felt really good. I was ‘embarrassing’ for how strong I felt.”
Leadership Style: Actions Over Words
Despite his brilliance on the field, Totti was often criticised for not being vocal in the locker room. When asked about this, he accepted the reputation without dispute. He explained, “I’ve always believed that what matters is what you do on the pitch. Outside, everyone talks. They would say to me: why don’t you speak to the team before the game? But I have to go play football and enjoy myself. I never felt tension before a match.”
