Saudi Arabia Suspends $2.5bn Neom Stadium Project Amid Economic Strains Ahead of 2034 World Cup
Plans for a $2.5 billion stadium in Saudi Arabia's futuristic Neom city, intended as a centerpiece for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, have been suspended. The project, which was set to feature a 46,000-seat arena, has no definite timeline for resumption, raising doubts about the completion of the 15 stadiums promised for the tournament.
Neom Project Paused Due to Shifting Priorities
The stadium, designed to rise 350 meters above ground within the ambitious Line development, is now on hold amid a reevaluation of spending priorities under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 plan. Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Public Investment Fund, indicated that the Line development is not a top priority before 2030, signaling a strategic change in focus.
Tournament Preparations Continue Despite Setbacks
Even with the halt of the Neom stadium and the earlier suspension of the Mukaab skyscraper project in Riyadh, Saudi officials claim that preparations for the World Cup are progressing. The Saudi World Cup 2034 Hosting Higher Authority confirmed that significant infrastructure work is underway at alternative venues. FIFA has previously praised Saudi Arabia's hosting proposal as exceptional.
Economic Challenges Impacting Projects
Saudi Arabia faces economic difficulties including a projected budget deficit and a 3.6% decline in real GDP, attributed to falling oil revenues. Regional tensions and security threats, such as attacks near Aramco facilities by Yemen's Houthi rebels, add pressure. Despite these hurdles, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman views hosting the 2034 World Cup as key to enhancing the kingdom's global economic and diplomatic status.
