Arsenal's Pre-Season Debut Against Girona: Key Players and Expectations

Mikel Arteta is poised to roll out the first real glimpse of Arsenal’s summer today, and it should come with a debut.

After a low-key, behind-closed-doors workout against MK Dons on Saturday, Girona provide the first public test of the pre-season. This is the curtain-raiser the supporters actually get to see, a chance to measure the mood, the sharpness and the new ideas up close.

Key names are missing. The Arsenal contingent who went deep at the World Cup with Spain and England are still on their holidays, granted extra recovery after a long year. Martin Odegaard, who drove Norway to the quarter-finals, has not yet rejoined the group either. They all have conditioning to make up when they report back.

One player looks ready to skip that queue. Kai Havertz, working on his own at Bayer Leverkusen’s training base last week, has kept himself ticking over and is in contention to walk straight into Arteta’s starting side against Girona. If the manager wants an early look at his attacking structure with a new focal point, this is the obvious moment.

There is movement elsewhere in the squad. Gabriel and Gabriel Martinelli are due to link up with the group ahead of the game, though expectations around their minutes are being kept low after only limited training. Their presence matters more than their playing time at this stage.

Defensive Concerns

At the back, there is both concern and opportunity. William Saliba is facing what has been described as an “extended period” out with a back injury, a serious blow to the stability of Arsenal’s defence. Jurrien Timber, recovering from minor groin surgery over the summer, is also not quite ready and will need longer before he can be considered.

The positive news comes in the shape of Ben White. The right-back, whose knee injury cut short his season, is closing in on a return. He did not feature against MK Dons but has been back in full training for the past couple of weeks and could get his first minutes today. Any appearance, however brief, would mark an important step in his comeback.

Saliba’s absence opens a door for others. Cristhian Mosquera is expected to be handed another chance to show he can hold that central defensive line in the Frenchman’s place. These are the auditions that matter in July, the ones that can quietly reshape a depth chart before the competitive games arrive.

Young Talent

Further forward, the academy storylines are impossible to ignore. Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri will both be pushing for time on the pitch, eager to turn training-ground promise into something more tangible. A sharp cameo here, a composed touch there, and they strengthen their case to stay around the first-team picture when the senior internationals return.

This is still only pre-season, still only Girona. But for Arteta, with debuts to grant, injuries to navigate and youngsters to assess, the choices he makes today will echo into the months that follow.
