Arsenal Pursue Bruno Guimaraes as Newcastle Stand Firm
Arsenal have fired the first shot in what could become one of the defining transfer sagas of the summer, seeing an opening move for Bruno Guimaraes knocked back by Newcastle United but signalling they are ready to come again.
The Premier League champions, long-term admirers of the Brazilian, have begun to probe the edges of Newcastle’s resistance as they look to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s midfield and add another left-sided attacking option.
Arsenal circle Guimaraes – but Newcastle slam the door
The interest is no longer a whisper. Ben Jacobs revealed that Arsenal made what he described as an “exploratory approach” to Guimaraes’ camp, mirroring a similar enquiry made by Manchester United before the window opened. At that stage, there had been no contact with Newcastle, who made it clear they had no intention of selling.
That line has now been tested.
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Arsenal went beyond sounding out the player and approached Newcastle directly. The London club explored a deal in the region of £55m, a figure that might tempt many Premier League sides but, according to Romano, drew a firm response on Tyneside.
Newcastle, he reported, “closed the doors” to that proposal. No negotiation, no softening of stance. Not at that price.
Brazilian outlet GeGlobo went further, describing the move as a formal £55m offer that Newcastle have rejected, while stressing that Arsenal intend to return with an improved bid. The champions are clearly not treating this as a speculative punt.
For now, Guimaraes is said to be leaving the situation in Newcastle’s hands and respecting the club’s position. That puts the spotlight squarely on the boardrooms. How hard will Arsenal push? How long can Newcastle hold a line that, at some point, may be tested by both the size of the fee and their own squad-building needs after missing out on European football?
Midfield rebuild and a new wide threat
Arsenal’s pursuit of Guimaraes is part of a broader plan. The club want a central midfielder and a left winger this summer, and Thursday’s reports suggested that Guimaraes and Morgan Rogers have emerged as leading targets for those roles.
Guimaraes would bring control, bite and progression to the heart of Arteta’s side, the kind of profile that has drawn inevitable comparisons with some of the club’s great Brazilian midfielders of the past. Rogers, by contrast, would add direct running and creativity from the flank.
The opening salvo for Guimaraes has been repelled, but Arsenal’s intent is obvious. This is not a casual enquiry. It is the start of a chase.
Arsenal confident over Jeremy Monga
While Newcastle stand firm, another negotiation looks far more inviting for the champions.
Leicester City youngster Jeremy Monga has also been in Arsenal’s sights, with the club seeing an initial “cheeky” offer turned down on Thursday. That first bid may have fallen short, but the mood around this deal is very different.
Football Insider report that Arsenal are “confident of finalising a deal” for Monga this summer. Talks between the two clubs are under way as they try to agree a fee and avoid the uncertainty of a tribunal. Crucially, the player is understood to be willing to make the move to the Emirates, a factor that always shifts the balance.
Leicester want to be properly compensated. Arsenal want to secure another highly rated talent before rivals circle. Both sides have a reason to find common ground.
One move blocked, one move edging forward. Arsenal’s summer is only just beginning, but the message is already clear: they intend to defend their crown by going straight after players who can change the temperature of a title race.
