Arsenal Intensifies Pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes Amid Newcastle's Concerns

Arsenal’s pursuit of Bruno Guimaraes has moved from flirtation to full-scale push, and the pressure is starting to tell on Tyneside.

An opening bid from the Gunners was knocked back by Newcastle on Monday, but the story has not cooled. Far from it. Standard Sport understands the Brazilian midfielder has made clear to Newcastle that he wants the move to north London, even as he trains with his current team-mates at their pre-season camp in Spain.

Personal terms are not an issue. Reports elsewhere say Guimaraes has already agreed a five-year contract with Arsenal, a framework that leaves the two clubs haggling over price rather than possibility. Inside both camps, there is a growing expectation that a deal will be struck in the coming days.

And now there is another telling sign. Newcastle appear to be lining up life after Bruno.

According to O Jogo, the club have made their first concrete move for Porto midfielder Victor Froholdt, contacting the Dane’s representatives to explore a transfer. After a year in which Newcastle have been knocked back publicly by several targets, sounding out Froholdt’s interest early is a calculated move, a way to avoid another very visible rejection.

This is no straightforward succession plan, though.

Froholdt has repeatedly said he is happy at Porto and wants to stay. Fresh from being named Primeira Liga’s Player of the Season, he has every reason to feel settled and valued. Porto, for their part, have not yet received a formal offer from Newcastle, and any approach would run straight into a £73.4 million release clause.

That figure alone makes negotiations complex. The player’s stance makes them even trickier.

“People talk about taking the next step, but for me Porto is already a huge club,” Froholdt said recently, underlining his commitment. “I am focused on the next league match. I like being here. Now we are going all out for the championship.”

Those are not the words of a man agitating for a move, yet Newcastle’s interest is real. They know Guimaraes’s departure would rip out the heart of Eddie Howe’s midfield. They also know they cannot afford to be caught cold if Arsenal finally hit the number that forces their hand.

Arsenal, for their part, are pushing to make Guimaraes their first major signing of the summer, a statement addition in the middle of the pitch. Newcastle are testing the water with Froholdt. One club leaning in, the other bracing for impact.

If the Brazilian does walk away from St James’ Park, the next question is simple and brutal for Newcastle: can they persuade Porto’s midfield star to step into the void?
