Arsenal Signs Ona Batlle on Free Transfer

Arsenal have pulled off one of the marquee moves of the women’s summer window, signing Spain international Ona Batlle on a free transfer after her departure from Barcelona.

The 27-year-old full-back has agreed a four-year deal in north London, with an option for a further season, in a move that sends a clear signal about Arsenal’s intent to close the gap at the very top of the European game.

A serial winner arrives

Batlle leaves Barcelona with her medal collection already overflowing. In three years back at the club where she came through the academy, she made 114 appearances, won three consecutive league titles and lifted two Champions League trophies.

Her final act in Barça colours in Europe was a painful one: starting the 2025 Champions League final that Arsenal famously won. Now she crosses the divide, swapping the side she helped dominate the continent for the one that denied them on the biggest stage.

“Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world and I can't wait to feel the joy of playing in front of our supporters at Emirates Stadium alongside so many great players,” Batlle said. “I want to win trophies and I feel this is the right place to achieve that.”

From La Masia to London

Batlle’s path to this point has been anything but linear. A product of Barcelona’s academy, she had to leave to truly break through, making her senior debut with Madrid CFF in 2017 before establishing herself in the top flight at Levante.

Her performances there drew the attention of Manchester United, who brought her to the Women’s Super League in 2020. Across three seasons in England she became one of the league’s standout full-backs, making 77 appearances and cementing her place as a Spain regular, before Barcelona brought her home as a fully formed international star.

On the global stage, her résumé is just as heavy. Batlle has already earned 76 caps for Spain, played a key role in their 2023 World Cup triumph and was part of the side that finished runners-up to England at Euro 2025. Recognition followed: she was named in the Fifa Best XI in both 2024 and 2025, underlining her status among the elite in her position.

It is understood she signed a pre-contract agreement with Arsenal earlier this year, long before her exit from Barcelona was confirmed.

Arsenal’s intent made clear

For Arsenal manager Renee Slegers, this is the kind of signing that can tilt a title race.

“I'm delighted that we've been able to bring Ona to the club,” Slegers said. “She's a hugely experienced full-back with strong attacking intent and great physical attributes. She's a winner and we want to go for more wins together.”

Clare Wheatley, Arsenal’s director of women’s football, did not hide the scale of the capture.

“Ona's track record at both club and international level speaks for itself,” Wheatley said. “She's a proven winner with a hunger to add more trophies. We're delighted to bring one of the best defenders in the world to Arsenal.”

Batlle’s aggressive, front-foot style from full-back should dovetail with Arsenal’s attacking ambitions, adding thrust on the flanks and steel in transition. She will wear the number 22 shirt in north London.
