Arsenal’s Tactical Approach is Testing Ben White and Jurrien Timber Physically
Arteta Faces Challenge Managing Right-Backs' Fitness
Mikel Arteta is dealing with a tricky situation in defense after Ben White picked up a groin injury during Arsenal's win at Sunderland. Meanwhile, Jurrien Timber is still recovering from his own fitness issues. Keeping these two key right-backs healthy has become a major hurdle for the Gunners.
Injury Hits Arsenal's Right-Back Options
White was forced off at halftime against Sunderland due to a groin problem, stirring concerns about Arsenal’s depth on the right side. He had started the season strongly following recovery from a knee injury that ended his World Cup hopes in May. Though he overcame a knock in the Champions League match versus Napoli, this latest setback adds to Arsenal's fitness worries.
Timber came on for White during the Sunderland game, marking his first appearance this season after dealing with his own groin trouble. When one defender is sidelined, the other must take on a heavy physical burden, increasing risk of further injury.
The High Physical Toll on Modern Full-Backs
The full-back role demands relentless energy in today’s game. Arteta requires his defenders to make constant overlapping runs, sprint back defensively, and maintain high-speed movements throughout matches. Injury analyst Stephen Smith from Kitman Labs explains that the strain comes less from total distance covered and more from repeated explosive sprints along the flank.
"Full-back is certainly one of the most demanding positions on the field and the data backs it up," Smith said. "The honest picture is demand for a full-back isn’t about total mileage, it is about the type of running – repeated, explosive sprints up and down the same channel."
Squad Depth and Recovery Plans are Key
Arsenal have good coverage on the left with players like Riccardo Calafiori, Piero Hincapie, and Myles Lewis-Skelly, but managing the right side workload is crucial if the Gunners want to stay competitive. White sat out the Carabao Cup win over Ipswich, with Martin Zubimendi filling in at right-back. Timber was rested too, though Arteta confirmed the Dutchman has had no new problems since returning from an ACL injury last season.
Smith advised caution on rushing players back from injury: "Even a mild groin or adductor strain typically needs a week or two of managed loading before a player is even back to full training intensity."
International Break Offers Time for Recovery
Arsenal prepare for their next Premier League match against Brighton, White's former club, on September 19. While White might be available, the three-week international break ahead gives both players a chance to recover fully.
This period can be used to rebuild their fitness gradually. With the title race demanding top physical form, careful rotation and load management will be vital to maintaining Arsenal's defensive strength. Managing this now could help keep White and Timber fit and ready when the season resumes.
