Arsenal Targets Manchester United's Sam Mather Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye
Arsenal have stepped straight into Manchester United’s backyard, launching a bold bid to sign youngsters Sam Mather Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye in what is fast becoming a full-blown academy arms race between the two clubs.
The Telegraph reports that the Premier League champions are pushing hard to prise the pair away from Old Trafford this summer, with both players viewed as key pieces in an aggressive youth recruitment drive at London Colney.
This is no isolated raid. It lands as a direct response to United’s successful captures of Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven from Arsenal in recent seasons, a sequence that stung in north London and has clearly sharpened minds behind the scenes. The balance of power at youth level is very much in play.
United duo ready to move on
Scanlon, 19, and Ogunneye, 20, both spent last season out on loan chasing senior minutes that looked hard to come by at United.
Scanlon headed to Swindon Town in League Two, scoring once in six appearances as he sampled the grind of men’s football. Ogunneye took a longer run at it, featuring 21 times for Newport County before returning to his parent club in January.
Those spells appear to have clarified their next steps. Both are now understood to be ready to leave United permanently to accelerate their development, and Arsenal have moved quickly to capitalise.
The London club are believed to have already secured a two-year deal for Scanlon, with an option for a further 12 months. That structure underlines how convinced Arsenal are about his potential, while still giving them flexibility as he transitions into their system.
De Maesschalck era starts with a statement
This push forms part of a wider reset at academy level. Pascal De Maesschalck has arrived as the new head of Arsenal’s academy, replacing Per Mertesacker, and the early signs point to an unapologetically aggressive talent grab, particularly within the domestic market.
Sporting director Andrea Berta set out the tone around the appointment, saying: “We are delighted to welcome Pascal to Arsenal. He brings extensive experience from some of Europe's leading football clubs and has an outstanding track record in youth development. We are excited to have him with us as we continue to build for the future, developing young players and identifying the best emerging talent to join Arsenal on a journey towards professional football."
The message is clear: Arsenal do not just want to protect their own pipeline. They want to raid others.
Paperwork, compensation – and what comes next
Arsenal must now complete the formalities. Paperwork and compensation agreements with Manchester United stand between them and the completion of the double move, but the intent from north London is unmistakable.
The club are also closing in on other teenage additions, including Vincent Joseph and Axel Donczew, as they look to stockpile high-upside prospects for the coming years.
For supporters, the intrigue lies a step further down the line. It is one thing to win the academy tug-of-war with United. The real question is which of these signings will eventually convince Mikel Arteta that they belong under the Emirates floodlights on a Premier League weekend.
