PSG Forced to Change Ligue 1 Opener Due to Heatwave Damage
Paris Saint-Germain will not begin their Ligue 1 title defence in the capital after an unprecedented summer heatwave left the Parc des Princes pitch “severely damaged” and unsafe.
The French champions had been scheduled to host Rennes on Sunday, but the fixture has been reversed and will now be played in Brittany, after Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) officials ruled the surface in Paris unfit.
An inspection found the pitch “did not allow the match to be played under satisfactory conditions, particularly with regard to the safety and physical integrity of the players”. In other words: the grass simply could not cope with the heat.
PSG have confirmed the turf at the Parc des Princes will be completely relaid before their next home game, against Monaco on 4 September. The club said it “fully understand[s] the inconvenience caused by this change” and underlined that it was dealing with an “exceptional situation”.
The word “exceptional” is no exaggeration. France recorded its hottest day ever on average nationwide on 24 June, with temperatures in Paris pushing close to 41C and half the country placed under a red heat alert.
The human cost was stark. Between 22 and 28 June, deaths across France rose by 2,025 – nearly a 30% increase – with fatalities in the Paris region alone up by 62% over the same period.
The extreme conditions have gripped much of western Europe, fuelling wildfires in parts of France and putting infrastructure, including elite sports venues, under strain.
PSG are not alone in battling the climate’s impact on their playing surface. In Spain, Celta Vigo were forced to postpone their La Liga opener against Osasuna earlier this month after a fungal “disease” spread across the Estadio de Balaidos pitch. The outbreak developed over a summer spell in which temperatures did not dip below 25C for more than three weeks, creating a perfect breeding ground for fungus and a nightmare for groundskeepers.
Two major clubs, in two top leagues, both pushed into emergency measures before a ball has truly started rolling. The season is under way, but the weather is already on the front foot.
