Arsenal Targets Gibraltar Winger Scanlon for Youth Development
Arsenal’s recruitment push at youth level has a new headline name. Nineteen-year-old winger Scanlon has emerged as a serious target as the club steps up plans to refresh its next generation.
The Leicester-born wide man spent the second half of last season on loan at League Two side Swindon, where his sharpness in wide areas and willingness to attack defenders drew attention. At international level he is already firmly established: capped 24 times by Gibraltar, whom he represents through his mother’s heritage.
Arsenal do not expect personal terms to be a stumbling block. Scanlon is understood to be keen on a move to north London and the chance to slot into one of the Premier League’s most ambitious development structures.
The real battle lies elsewhere. Talks are ongoing with United over a fee, with the Gunners hopeful the negotiations can accelerate over the next 72 hours. The sense inside the club is that this is a move they want wrapped up quickly.
Key Figures in the Pursuit
Two figures in particular are driving the pursuit. Chris Perkins, who arrived at Arsenal in 2023 as a professional development phase scout, has tracked Scanlon’s progress for years. Perkins previously spent six years as head of academy recruitment at Derby, overseeing the winger’s rise through the age-group system and building a long-standing admiration for his game.
Then there is David Horseman. Appointed this week as the new head coach of Arsenal’s Under-21s, he has also pushed Scanlon’s case strongly. Horseman joined the club a year ago as elite player development coach, taking charge of the U19s in the UEFA Youth League and the U21s in the EFL Trophy, and has quickly become an influential voice in shaping the pathway from academy to first team.
Before that, Horseman had a short spell at United, where he worked directly with Scanlon and came away impressed by his attitude and potential. His endorsement has added extra weight to Arsenal’s internal discussions and helped move the deal up the priority list.
Exploring More Targets
Arsenal are not stopping at one target either. They are exploring the possibility of a double swoop on United, with right-back Habeeb Ogunneye also on their radar. The defender spent the first half of last season on loan at fourth-tier Newport before being recalled in January, and is viewed as another player who could strengthen the club’s youth and development ranks.
If Arsenal get both over the line, it would be a clear statement of intent: the next phase of their project will be built not only on marquee senior signings, but on carefully chosen young talents they believe can grow into the shirt.
