Marcus Rashford Supports Carragher Amid Neville Debate on Manchester United Forward
Marcus Rashford has made his feelings clear. He wants to play, not be a permanent talking point.
The Manchester United forward, back at Old Trafford after a season on loan at Barcelona, publicly sided with Jamie Carragher after Gary Neville once again dragged his name into debate on the Stick to Football show.
The exchange was pure studio theatre.
“Marcus Rashford, what do we think? Last question,” Neville asked.
Carragher snapped. “Oh ***********. Can we do a podcast without mentioning Rashford? Stop it! Oh my god. It’s like the Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Rashford – there was like a little part of the podcast – the Trent part or the Rashford part.”
Neville tried to pivot. “How is Trent?” he said, only to get another exasperated “Oh my God!” from Carragher.
When Neville clarified, “No, but he’s come back to United,” Carragher shut it down: “So what? Oh my God. He’s just a good player for Man United!”
Rashford saw enough. He reposted the clip on X and nailed his colours to the mast.
“Thanks, Jamie,” he wrote. “It would be great to be able to get my head down and play football without my name being mentioned every day,” adding a crying emoji to underline the frustration.
Rashford’s reset at United
Only a few weeks ago, the assumption around Rashford was very different. With the Premier League season fast approaching, the expectation was that he would be playing his football elsewhere.
Barcelona, where he spent last season on loan, held a £26million option to buy. On the back of a campaign in which he delivered 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances and helped secure La Liga – the first league title of his career – a permanent move looked plausible.
The Catalan club went another way. They chose to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United instead, leaving the door wide open for Rashford’s return to Manchester.
That door has not just opened; it’s been welcomed. The 28‑year‑old pulled on a United shirt for the first time in nearly two years in a recent friendly against AC Milan, coming off the bench in a defeat that mattered less than the sight of him back in red. Around Carrington, he has thrown himself into the role of senior pro, acting as a mentor to several younger players.
Inside the club, the mood around his future has shifted. The transfer window runs until September 1, but the sense now is that the longer this goes on, the more likely it is Rashford stays.
Carrick’s stance on Rashford
Michael Carrick has already sat down for lengthy talks with the England international and made his position clear.
“He’s our player, you know, and he’s come back great. He’s just like any other player,” Carrick said. “I’ve known Marcus a long time and, you know, he gives us something a little bit different. And he’s been in great spirits since he’s been back.
“He’s been back two or three days training and it’s just pretty normal, to be honest. And we’re looking forward to the start of the season.”
Normality is exactly what Rashford seems to crave. Less noise, more football.
He has not played a Premier League game since December 2024, yet his form in Spain ensured he remained in the international picture. Those standout displays at Camp Nou earned him a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the recent World Cup, restoring a level of status that had wobbled during his final months before the loan.
Now, as the debate rages on television studios and social media, Rashford is trying to step away from it. His recent comments point to a player who wants the speculation to stop and the football to start.
United’s new campaign begins away to newly‑promoted Hull City on Saturday, August 22 (12:30pm BST). If Rashford does stay, the real talking will soon be done on the pitch.
