Arsenal Closer to Ending 22-Year Title Wait
Arsenal walked out of the London Stadium on Sunday with more than just three points. They left with daylight. A 1-0 win over West Ham United has reopened a five-point gap at the top of the Premier League and tilted the title race firmly back in their favour.
Manchester City had done their part 24 hours earlier. A routine-looking 3-0 victory over Brentford on Saturday briefly tightened the screw, trimming Arsenal’s lead to two points and asking the question of Mikel Arteta’s side once again. This, remember, came on the back of City dropping two costly points in that wild 3-3 draw at Everton.
Arsenal answered. Not with a flourish, but with the kind of narrow, nervy win that often defines champions.
How soon can Arsenal finish the job?
The earliest Arsenal can finally end their 22-year wait for a league title is as soon as next Monday, 18 May, when they host already-relegated Burnley.
For that scenario to come into play, City must first stumble.
Pep Guardiola’s side face Crystal Palace at home on Wednesday, 13 May. Any slip there changes everything. If City draw, they would fall four points behind Arsenal. If they lose, the gap stretches to five.
That’s where the pressure really bites.
Should City fail to take maximum points against Palace, Arsenal would walk into the Burnley game knowing exactly what is on the line. Win that match, and the numbers become brutal for the champions: Arsenal would be at least seven points clear with City having only six left to play for.
No permutations. No final-day drama. Just a decisive break in a race that has felt breathless for months.
Arsenal have been here before in title chases, only to see City surge past them in the closing stretch. This time, the door is open. The question is no longer whether they can see it; it’s whether anyone can slam it shut before they walk through.
