Atletico Madrid Pursue Jorge Salinas Amid Manchester United Interest
Atletico Madrid are accelerating their move for Racing Santander’s highly rated left-back Jorge Salinas as they try to steal a march on Manchester United’s growing interest in the teenager.
United identified the 19-year-old months ago and have tracked him closely ever since. Scouts followed him throughout last season as he helped Racing clinch promotion to LaLiga, then doubled down on their checks when Salinas pulled on the Spain shirt at the European Under-19 Championship in Wales this summer.
They liked what they saw.
Salinas spent three weeks with Spain’s U19s, with United representatives in the stands throughout the tournament. His performances only strengthened the glowing reports already on file at Old Trafford, as he played a key part in Spain going on to lift the trophy.
That body of evidence has pushed United towards a decision: whether to turn admiration into a formal bid and trigger his €16million (£13.7m / $18.6m) release clause.
Atletico change the picture
Just as United weigh their move, Atletico have stepped in with purpose.
Unlike some clubs who have viewed Salinas as one for the future, Atletico see him as ready to compete for a first-team place now. The Madrid side have ramped up talks over the past month, a shift that coincided with Matteo Ruggeri’s departure to Aston Villa and left a gap to fill on the left.
Sources indicate Atletico know United have already spoken to both Racing and Salinas’ camp. That awareness has sharpened their urgency. The fear in Madrid is simple: if United decide to activate the clause, the Premier League pull could complicate everything.
So Atletico are pushing. Hard. The aim is clear – get a deal in place before United move from monitoring to action.
United’s left-back puzzle
For United, Salinas is a serious option, but not the only one.
Lewis Hall of Newcastle remains the preferred target. United are working to try and prise him away from St James’ Park, yet they face a major obstacle: Newcastle do not want to sell. That stance has forced United to keep alternative plans alive.
Salinas has climbed that list. His age, ceiling and relatively accessible clause make him an increasingly attractive solution if Hall proves unattainable.
He is not alone on the shortlist. RB Leipzig’s David Raum is also under consideration, offering a more established profile, while Club Brugge’s Joaquin Seys has been scouted as well. Belgian sources, though, are adamant Seys will not be leaving this summer, shutting down that avenue for now.
And so the race for Salinas tightens.
Atletico are trying to move first, intent on convincing the player he will walk straight into a first-team environment in Madrid. United, meanwhile, continue to study their left-back options, weighing up whether this is the moment to pull the trigger on that €16million clause.
The teenager’s next step now looks less like a slow-burn decision and more like a sprint to the finish.
