Mourinho's Convincing Message to Vinicius Jr
Jose Mourinho has revealed the simple message he used to help convince Vinicius Jr to turn down a free‑transfer exit and tie his future to Real Madrid.
The Brazilian, 26, was heading into the final year of his contract at the Bernabeu and, from next summer, would have been free to walk away. Arsenal, fresh from a Premier League title, were watching closely, sensing a rare chance to prise away one of the game’s elite wingers.
Instead, Vinicius signed a six-year deal earlier this month. A statement of intent from the player. A huge win for Real. And, as Mourinho has now made clear, not a coincidence.
Mourinho’s message: “Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.”
Back for a second spell in charge of Real after his June appointment, the 63-year-old explained on Spanish TV show El Chiringuito how he spoke directly to Vinicius as negotiations dragged on.
“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho said.
He then lifted the lid on the conversation that helped settle the forward’s mind.
“The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”
For Mourinho, it was not just about history or prestige. It was about what Vinicius feels every day inside the dressing room.
“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he added, pointing to a squad and a project that convinced the Brazilian to stay put.
From Champions League rivals to the same side
Only a few months ago, Mourinho was trying to knock Real out of Europe. As Benfica manager last season, he faced the Spanish giants three times in the Champions League.
Their second meeting – the first leg of a knockout phase play-off – exploded into controversy. Real players alleged that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Vinicius, prompting an eight-minute stoppage as tempers flared and officials tried to regain control.
Prestianni denied the accusations. Mourinho, then in charge of Benfica, publicly backed his player.
UEFA later intervened, banning Prestianni for three matches, with a further three suspended, for homophobic conduct. The governing body did not issue a racism-related sanction in that case.
Now, with Mourinho and Vinicius on the same side in Madrid, the Portuguese coach has moved to underline where he stands.
“He can look me in the eye”
“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate,” Mourinho said. “If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story.”
That loyalty to his own has defined Mourinho’s career. But so has his ability to switch lines once the dressing room changes.
“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side,” he said.
From adversary in Europe to guardian in Madrid, Mourinho has made his position clear. Vinicius has chosen to stay, to lead Real into a new era, and he will do it with one of football’s most forceful personalities firmly in his corner.
