What Australia and Paraguay Must Do to Reach World Cup Knockouts from Group D

The final group stage match on Thursday will see Australia face off against Paraguay, with a place in the World Cup knockout rounds at stake. The United States has already secured top spot, while Turkey is out of contention.

Australia began their Group D journey with a 2-0 victory over Turkey but then fell 2-0 to the USA. Meanwhile, Paraguay lost 4-1 to the hosts USA but managed a 1-0 win against Turkey despite being down to ten men.

New Tiebreaker Rules Affect Qualification Scenarios

This World Cup uses head-to-head results as the second tiebreaker after points, replacing goal difference in this role. This tweak changes how teams advance from the group stage.

With the USA assured of first place and Turkey eliminated, the contest narrows to Australia and Paraguay for the runner-up position. The winner between these two will qualify automatically with 6 points.

If one team loses, they will finish on 3 points and must hope to be among the best eight third-place teams to progress.

Draw Scenario and Its Implications

A draw would leave both teams on 4 points. Since Australia's current goal difference stands at zero and Paraguay's at minus two, and these would remain unchanged by a draw, Australia would take second place on goal difference.

That result would force Paraguay to wait on other group outcomes to determine if their four points are enough to reach the knockout phase as one of the top third-placed teams.

Head-to-Head Over Goal Difference

If teams end level on points, the head-to-head record decides their ranking. For instance, if one team beat the other in their group encounter, that team ranks higher.

When multiple teams tie on points, a mini-league considers only the matches among those teams, ranking them by points earned in these games, followed by goal difference and goals scored within those head-to-head matches. If still tied, overall goal difference and goals scored are evaluated next.

Further Tiebreakers: Fair Play and FIFA Rankings

If teams remain inseparable after all previous criteria, the Team Conduct Score (TCS) is applied. This fair play measure deducts points for cards received:

  • Yellow card: -1 point
  • Red card from two yellows: -3 points
  • Straight red card: -4 points
  • Yellow plus straight red: -5 points

The team with the highest TCS (closest to zero) advances. If still tied, the FIFA rankings from June will decide who moves on.

Ranking Third-Placed Teams

The top eight third-place teams across all groups qualify based on points. If more than eight teams share the same point total, goal difference becomes the next factor.

Usually, a third-place finish with four points should be enough to advance, while three points may require an excellent goal difference to continue.
