Barcelona's Bid for Julián Álvarez: Yuste Confirms Interest

Barcelona vice-president Rafael Yuste has lifted the lid on one of the summer’s worst-kept secrets: the club did make an offer for Julián Álvarez.

He stopped there. No fee, no contract details, no hint of how close – or how far – Barcelona came. But the admission alone underlines how serious Barça are about reshaping their attack.

Yuste admits bid for Álvarez – and draws a line

Speaking to TV3 after Barcelona’s Joan Gamper Trophy outing, Yuste was pressed on the club’s pursuit of the Atlético Madrid forward. Álvarez has been repeatedly linked with a move to Catalonia, even as Atlético hold firm and insist the Argentine is not for sale.

Reports in Spain have suggested Álvarez wants to leave Atlético, while Barcelona continue to scan the market for attacking reinforcements. The ingredients for a transfer saga are all there: a big club pushing, a rival refusing, a player restless.

Yuste chose his words carefully.

He refused to go into detail on Álvarez, stressing that Barcelona must tread lightly when speaking publicly about a player under contract at another La Liga club. He highlighted the long-standing relationship with Atlético’s hierarchy, name-checking Miguel Ángel Gil and Enrique Cerezo as part of a bond built “for years and years”.

“I don’t like to talk about players who aren’t ours. We’ve had a very good relationship with Miguel Ángel Gil and President Cerezo for years and years, and so these are things that I would say are part and parcel of football.

“We must maintain decorum and let common sense prevail,” Yuste said, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

His remarks left several key questions hanging. Is the original offer still on the table? Are Barcelona preparing a second push? On those points, Yuste offered nothing.

What he did do was confirm the core of the story.

“We made an offer and that’s that. We must focus entirely on what Hansi said recently: that we have a match on Sunday and we have to go out and win it.

“There are 38 matches in La Liga and each one is worth three points, so we’re fully focused on trying to secure our first win,” he added.

The message was clear: yes, Barcelona moved for Álvarez. No, they are not turning this into a public tug-of-war with Atlético.

Transfer window still alive at Barcelona

Behind the scenes, though, the market remains very much active at Montjuïc.

Yuste underlined that Barcelona are still open to strengthening the squad before the transfer window closes. The club’s sporting department, led by Deco, continues to work on potential deals after completing the signing of Rodri.

Yuste took the opportunity to praise the structure around him, pointing to Deco’s leadership and the growing influence of Bojan and Alejandro Echeverría in the club’s recruitment strategy.

“We have a great technical team, with Deco, Bojan and Alejandro Echeverría, who is also doing an exceptional job, and the transfer window is still open.”

The Álvarez bid may be parked for now. The market, and Barcelona’s ambition in it, is not.
