Barcelona Cancels World Cup Tribute for Spain Stars Amid Political Tensions

Barcelona has officially called off a tribute planned to honor the eight Spanish players who won the World Cup last month. This decision came ahead of their La Liga match against Athletic Club and follows recent clashes between fans and police that heightened political tensions.

Tensions Spark Cancellation at Camp Nou

The club intended to celebrate their Spanish champions before the game on Thursday, marking their contribution to Spain’s victory in New Jersey. Other teams across Spain had already paid homage to their international stars during earlier home matches this season.

Yet, after disturbances at the previous match against Elche — where traveling fans faced police violence and had their pro-independence Estelada flags confiscated — Barcelona’s management decided to cancel the pre-match ceremony. Joan Laporta Explains the Decision

Club president Joan Laporta spoke out about the change on Wednesday, confirming that the tribute would no longer take place. He said the current situation made it inappropriate to hold a celebration, and that the Royal Spanish Football Federation understood the choice.

"The ceremony to honour the world champions will not take place because it is not being held in the most appropriate context," Laporta said.

He also defended fans' right to display the Estelada, a symbol closely linked with Catalan independence. Laporta emphasized that football should unite people rather than cause divisions.

"The Estelada represents the mindset of many Barca supporters and Catalans. It is part of freedom of expression," he added.

Criticism of Police Actions Against Supporters

The treatment of fans showing regional symbols remains a sensitive issue in Spain. Laporta condemned the force used by police officers against Barcelona supporters before the Elche match.

"We condemn and reject the disproportionate action of the national police officers who assaulted Barca fans for carrying the Estelada," Laporta declared. "We demand that this action, once the facts have been confirmed, be met with the appropriate punishment and sanctions."

He called for measures to protect supporters so they can display their flags without fear of violence or discrimination by state forces.

"We hope that appropriate punishment will help ensure that Catalans and Barca fans can carry the flag without fear of physical harm or stigmatisation by the State's security forces."

Focus Returns to the Pitch

Despite the controversy off the field, Barcelona now shifts focus back to their La Liga campaign. They face Athletic Club at Camp Nou on Thursday evening without the planned pre-match tribute.
