Barcelona's Strategic Move for Karim Adeyemi Amid Dortmund Standoff

Karim Adeyemi is back on Barcelona’s radar – and this time, the timing might finally suit everyone involved.

The Borussia Dortmund forward has been the subject of Jorge Mendes’ pitches to Barça for more than one summer, but the club’s financial straitjacket repeatedly killed the idea before it ever got serious. Now the picture has changed. Operating under La Liga’s 1:1 rule, Barcelona believe they can actually act on Mendes’ long-standing proposal rather than simply listen.

So they have.

Barça test Dortmund’s resolve

According to Sky Germany, relayed in Spain by SPORT, Barcelona have already sent an opening offer to Dortmund: €20 million up front, plus a sizeable sell-on percentage for any future transfer.

It is not the blockbuster bid of old Barça windows. It is a calculated move aimed at a very specific market opportunity.

Inside the club, Adeyemi is viewed as an experienced wide option to complement Roony Bardghji, not to push the younger talent aside. The idea is depth, variety, and a winger who already knows the demands of top-level European football.

The Catalans sense Dortmund’s hand is weaker than usual. The Bundesliga side have struggled to generate competing bids, and the clock on Adeyemi’s contract is ticking loudly: just one year left.

Negotiations are underway. An agreement, though, is still some distance away.

A €40m valuation meets a €20m reality

Dortmund’s stance has softened over the summer, but not nearly enough for Barcelona’s liking.

The German club continue to value Adeyemi at around €40 million. Barça see that figure as out of step with the market and with the player’s situation. One year on his deal. No guaranteed starting role last season. Two campaigns marked by inconsistency rather than dominance.

Those are the details Barcelona are using to frame their offer. Those are also the reasons Dortmund’s room for manoeuvre is shrinking.

The pressure does not just come from the calendar. Adeyemi has already reached an agreement with Barcelona on personal terms, tightening the squeeze on Dortmund. The player knows where he wants to go; the clubs now have to find a way to make the numbers meet.

For the moment, there is a sizeable gap. Dortmund hold to their valuation. Barcelona refuse to be dragged into a bidding war that does not exist.

Something has to give.

Player swaps on the table

One way to bridge that gap is already being explored: player exchanges.

Barcelona are open to inserting a footballer into the deal to drag the fixed fee down. Dortmund, for their part, have not hidden their admiration for some of the talent emerging from the Catalan system.

Roony Bardghji, linked with Dortmund earlier in the window, remains a name in the conversation. The winger wants regular minutes and sees his future at a club that fights for major honours but can also offer him a clear role. Dortmund tick both boxes and have a track record of developing attacking prospects.

Guille Fernández is another option with admirers in Germany. The Barça Atletic attacking midfielder, also represented by Mendes, has been on Dortmund’s radar since at least January, when they made enquiries that never turned into a deal.

Those names give both sides room to be creative. Cash plus a prospect. A lower fixed fee with a higher sell-on. Different formulas, same objective: turn a theoretical opportunity into a completed transfer.

Barcelona have made their move. Dortmund know the player wants out and that the contract clock is unforgiving.

Now the question is simple: will anyone blink before Adeyemi walks into his final year at Signal Iduna Park with one eye already on Camp Nou?
