Barcelona Signs Joao Cancelo on Permanent Deal

Barcelona have completed the signing of Portuguese full-back Joao Cancelo, finally turning a long, winding pursuit into a permanent deal.

The club announced the move with a burst of posts on its official X account, closing out negotiations that had dragged across the summer and making Cancelo one of the headline arrivals of their window.

Earlier reports had indicated the 32-year-old would join as a free agent after reaching an agreement with Al-Hilal to terminate his contract. The Saudi club released him after he agreed to waive the remainder of his financial entitlements, clearing the way for his return to Catalonia.

Cancelo has signed a three-year contract with Barcelona, tying him to the Spotify Camp Nou until 2029.

Third spell, first time as a Barça player for good

This is Cancelo’s third stint at the club, but the first time he can truly call himself a permanent Barcelona player.

He initially arrived on loan from Manchester City for the 2023–24 season, then came back again on loan from Al-Hilal for the second half of last season. Across that season and a half, he became a regular presence on the right flank and, at times, on the left.

In total, the Portuguese international played 65 matches in all competitions for Barcelona, scoring six goals and supplying nine assists. His attacking thrust from full-back helped the team to last season’s La Liga title, adding weight to the club’s determination to keep him long term.

From Al-Hilal exit to Barça rebuild

Cancelo departs Al-Hilal after two seasons on their books since the summer of 2024, though he only featured in one of them, having been cut from the domestic squad last season.

During his active year in Saudi Arabia, he made 45 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing 14 assists. It was a productive spell statistically, but it ended without a single trophy and ultimately without a place in the club’s plans.

Barcelona have now moved decisively to make use of that availability.

Fifth piece of an aggressive summer

Cancelo becomes Barcelona’s fifth signing of this transfer window, another piece in an increasingly bold rebuild.

He joins England winger Anthony Gordon, Germany forward Karim Adeyemi, Spain midfielder Rodri and Belgium talent Jesse Bisiou, while the club have also activated a purchase clause to keep young Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim.

With Cancelo now locked in until 2029, Barcelona have secured not just a familiar face, but a proven title-winning full-back to drive their next phase from the flanks.
