Barcelona Signs Rodri from Manchester City in £65m Deal
Barcelona have completed the signing of Rodri from Manchester City in a deal worth around £65m, prising one of the defining midfielders of his generation away from the Premier League champions.
The 2024 Ballon d'Or winner has signed a four-year contract at the Nou Camp, sealing a return to Spanish football five years after leaving Atletico Madrid for Manchester.
Now 30, Rodri walks away from City after seven seasons, 298 appearances and a medal collection that underlines his dominance: four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, three EFL Cups and the 2023 Champions League among 12 major honours.
His last two campaigns in England were disrupted by injury, the rhythm that once made him untouchable in Pep Guardiola’s side briefly broken. But he arrived at this summer’s World Cup reborn, dictating Spain’s run to the trophy and finishing the tournament as player of the competition as La Roja lifted the World Cup for the second time.
The performance on the biggest stage removed any doubt. Europe’s elite circled. Barcelona moved.
Emotional farewell to Manchester
Rodri’s departure closes a chapter that reshaped both his career and his life. In a farewell message to City supporters, he spoke with clear emotion about his time in Manchester.
"I am leaving the club with a huge sense of pride about what we have achieved and gratitude too for so many amazing memories," he said.
"What we have done together in these years is something both very special and unforgettable.
"City didn't just make me grow as a player. They made me grow as a human. I saw my brother graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University. I could see my girlfriend working for the NHS. Manchester shaped my whole life."
City had tried to keep him. Rodri was entering the final 12 months of the contract he signed in 2022, and the club wanted to tie him down to a new long-term deal. Talks dragged. No agreement came.
At that point, the transfer market woke up.
From Madrid interest to Barcelona breakthrough
Real Madrid initially looked best placed to bring Rodri back to La Liga. The move would have been layered with intrigue, given his Atletico Madrid past, but the Bernabeu hierarchy explored it seriously.
Speaking to Spanish radio in March about the possibility of joining Real Madrid, Rodri acknowledged the pull of such a move.
"There are more players who have taken that path. Not directly, but over time. You can't turn down the best clubs in the world," the former Atletico midfielder said.
Real Madrid later stepped away. The door opened. Barcelona walked through it.
Sources told BBC Sport that Barcelona had Rodri’s approval to begin negotiations with City. Their first bid, at £38.5m, was knocked back. City, under no obligation to sell quickly despite his contract situation, stood firm.
The Catalan club returned with a significantly improved offer, and this time the English champions agreed. The final fee, well above the initial proposal, reflects both Rodri’s status and Barcelona’s determination to rebuild their midfield around him.
A dream move and a new axis for Barcelona
On Monday, Rodri flew into Barcelona. At the airport, he summed up the moment in a single word: a "dream" to play for the Catalan giants.
For Barcelona, this is more than a marquee signing. It is a statement about how they want to play and who they want at the heart of it. A World Cup’s best player, a Champions League winner, a Ballon d'Or holder, now tasked with anchoring the next iteration of the Nou Camp midfield.
For City, it marks the end of an era in which Rodri became their metronome, the calm in the chaos of English football’s most relentless side.
For Rodri, it is a return home and a new pressure. He has conquered England and the world stage. Now he walks into a Barcelona side desperate to reclaim Europe.
The stage, once again, belongs to him.
