Transfer Market Update: Juventus, Liverpool, and More

The World Cup has disappeared into the rear-view mirror. Club football is roaring back, and with it, the transfer market is wide open again.

Across Europe, squads are being ripped up and rebuilt. Back in the United States, MLS clubs are quietly — and not so quietly — reshaping their rosters for the run-in. Here’s where the market stands on a busy Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Juventus moves for Vicario, Rodri lands in Barcelona, Liverpool strikes for Mbaye

At the top of the European game, the dominoes are already falling.

Juventus have snapped up goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham, adding a modern shot-stopper to anchor their next cycle. In Spain, Barcelona have completed the signing of Rodri, a move that had been edging toward “inevitable” for days and is now finally official.

Liverpool, never far from the action in any window, have reached an agreement for Ibrahim Mbaye as they continue to retool a squad aiming to stay in the title conversation.

The elite are not waiting around.

Porto circle Gimenez but hold their fire

Further down the ladder of completed deals sits one of the window’s more intriguing storylines.

FC Porto want AC Milan striker Santiago Gimenez. That much is clear. What they have not done yet, according to ESPN, is actually put an offer on the table.

Gimenez’s time in Italy has stalled. Since arriving from Feyenoord, the Mexico international has struggled to find rhythm or a consistent role, and after just a year and a half, the exit door is starting to open.

Portugal could be his reset button. For now, though, it’s only interest, not action — and the sense is that any agreement remains some distance away.

McKenzie heads home: Philadelphia Union’s back line gets its anchor

One deal much closer to home is taking shape for the USMNT.

Center back Mark McKenzie is returning to the Philadelphia Union, per The Athletic. The club that developed him in its academy is bringing him back in a move that feels both nostalgic and ruthlessly practical.

The Union will pay around $2.5 million to sign McKenzie from French side Toulouse. The 27-year-old will finish the first half of the 2026-27 season in Ligue 1 before making the switch back to MLS in the winter.

McKenzie left Philadelphia for Belgian club Genk in 2021, a textbook example of the Union’s pathway from academy to Europe. Now that path runs both ways, and Philadelphia’s defense looks set to benefit.

Sporting KC smash their transfer record for Andre Luiz

Sporting Kansas City have made their intentions for the future brutally clear.

The club has signed Brazilian winger Andre Luiz from Olympiacos in a deal that blows apart their previous transfer record. The reported fee: $18 million for the 24-year-old.

For an MLS side, that is statement money. It signals a belief that Luiz can be more than just another attacking option — he is being brought in as a focal point, a player to tilt games and seasons.

The pressure will follow the price tag. Sporting KC are betting big that he can carry it.

Galatasaray test United’s resolve over Bruno Fernandes

In Turkey, Galatasaray are aiming high.

The club is preparing a €30 million bid for Manchester United’s captain and talisman Bruno Fernandes, according to The Telegraph. They are not just dangling a fee, either; Galatasaray are ready to double the Portugal international’s salary to tempt him toward Istanbul.

There is one major problem with the plan: Manchester United.

Fernandes was named Premier League player of the season in 2025-26. United have built their attack, their leadership group, and much of their identity around him. The expectation is simple — they are highly unlikely to sanction his departure at this stage.

Galatasaray may knock loudly. Old Trafford does not look ready to open the door.

Dortmund land Veerman, Nkunku eyes a Leipzig reunion

In Germany, Borussia Dortmund have secured a key piece from PSV, bringing in Joey Veerman to add control and creativity to their midfield. It fits the club’s long-running strategy: identify a technically gifted playmaker and give him a bigger stage.

Another Bundesliga storyline is brewing around a familiar face.

Christopher Nkunku, currently on the outside looking in at AC Milan, could be on his way back to RB Leipzig, according to Calciomercato.com. New Milan coach Ruben Amorim has made it clear the Frenchman is not part of his plans, leaving Nkunku searching for a new home.

Leipzig know exactly what he can do. Between 2019 and 2023, Nkunku lit up the Bundesliga there, evolving into one of Europe’s most devastating attacking threats before leaving for Chelsea and later landing at Milan.

A return would not just be a sentimental move. It would drop a proven match-winner straight back into a club built to unleash him. As the window gathers pace, that reunion might become one of the stories that reshapes the season.
