Patrick Vieira Appointed Head Coach of Senegal National Team
Patrick Vieira is coming home – but not in the way many once imagined.
The former Arsenal and Inter Milan midfielder has been appointed head coach of Senegal’s national team, replacing Pape Thiaw, in one of the most eye-catching international hires of the year. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed the move in a social media statement, calling it a “strategic move” designed to “establish a high-level technical set-up, in line with our country’s sporting ambitions”.
Born in Dakar but a legend of French football, Vieira now steps into the dugout of the country where his story began.
From Dakar to World Cup glory
Vieira left Senegal as a child and went on to become a pillar of France’s golden generation. He was part of the 1998 squad that delivered France’s first World Cup, then helped secure the Euro 2000 title, collecting more than 100 caps for his adopted nation.
At club level, his journey started at Cannes in France before a brief spell with AC Milan. His career exploded when Arsène Wenger brought him to Arsenal in 1996. In North London, the combative midfielder became the heartbeat of a dominant side, winning three Premier League titles between 1996 and 2005 and defining an era with his authority in midfield.
He then returned to Italy, first with Juventus and then Inter, before closing out his playing days at Manchester City in 2011.
Now, at 50, he takes on a very different kind of pressure.
Thiaw out after AFCON chaos and World Cup disappointment
Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw, whose tenure ended in turmoil despite delivering silverware on the pitch.
Thiaw led Senegal to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title – only to see it stripped and awarded to Morocco after Senegal’s players and staff walked off mid-game. The fallout from that decision hung over his reign.
Any remaining credit disappeared at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Senegal crashed out in the Round of 32 after a 3-2 defeat to Belgium, a result that drew heavy criticism and ultimately cost Thiaw his job.
The FSF has now turned to a global name, and a native son, to reset the project.
A coach with miles on the clock
Vieira arrives with a coaching CV built across three countries and very different environments.
He started in 2016 with New York City FC in Major League Soccer, cutting his teeth in a league known for its tactical variety and travel demands. Nice then brought him back to France in 2018, handing him a first taste of Ligue 1 management.
The Premier League called again when Crystal Palace appointed him, giving Vieira two seasons in one of the most unforgiving leagues in the world. More recently, he has had one-year spells in charge of Strasbourg and Genoa, adding both French and Italian top-flight experience to his résumé.
Senegal will be his first national team job. The stakes, and the scrutiny, will be different.
Clock already ticking toward AFCON qualifiers
The federation’s statement on X noted that “the date of the official presentation and the next steps in [Vieira’s] installation will be the subject of a subsequent announcement.” The formalities can wait only so long.
Senegal’s next competitive tests are already on the calendar: the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, scheduled for the upcoming FIFA international window between September 21 and October 6, 2026.
CAF has yet to publish the full fixture list, but the draw is done. Senegal will face Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia in their group – a section they will be expected to control, but one that offers little margin for error given recent scars.
A World Cup winner from Dakar now stands on the touchline, charged with restoring order, pride and trophies. The question is simple, and brutal: can Patrick Vieira turn his story with Senegal from what might have been into what comes next?
