Barcelona's Striker Search: Gyokeres as Alvarez Stalemate Continues

Barcelona’s hunt for a new No. 9 is starting to feel like a race against the clock, and a new name has moved to the front of the contingency queue: Viktor Gyokeres.

With their push for Julian Alvarez stuck in neutral, the Catalan club are now preparing to probe the Arsenal striker’s situation, according to journalist Jose Alvarez Haya, who expects movement “in the coming hours.” The message from inside the club is clear: Alvarez remains the dream, but the reality of the market is forcing them to open other doors.

Alvarez blocked, Barcelona look elsewhere

For weeks, Barcelona’s plan at centre-forward has revolved around one man. Julian Alvarez is the preferred option, the profile they believe can reshape their attack. But one problem refuses to budge: Atletico Madrid.

The Rojiblancos have taken a hard line on the Argentine, flatly refusing to listen to offers from Barcelona. That stance has turned what was already a complicated deal into something close to a dead end, at least for now.

As the window ticks towards its close, the club can’t afford to wait forever. Other names have already come and gone from the rumour mill. Inter captain Lautaro Martinez was floated. So was Sporting CP’s Luis Suarez. Both ideas cooled quickly, leaving the technical staff to circle back and reassess the market.

That is where Gyokeres has stepped in.

Barcelona, sources say, are now ready to “explore” the Swedish forward’s situation at Arsenal, testing the waters to see whether a deal is even remotely viable. It is not yet a case of abandoning Alvarez, but rather of protecting themselves if Atletico Madrid refuse to soften their position.

For a club trying to rebuild a competitive squad under financial strain, going into the final days of the window with only one realistic target would be reckless. Gyokeres gives them a different route.

Gyokeres: big fee, mixed debut, lingering questions

Gyokeres arrived at Arsenal last summer under heavy expectations and a hefty price tag, joining from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth around €70 million after tearing through defences in Portugal.

In Lisbon, he had looked unstoppable. One of Europe’s most prolific strikers, a constant menace, a guarantee of goals. North London has been a tougher test.

His first campaign in England ended with 21 goals in all competitions. On paper, that is a solid return. For many forwards, it would be celebrated. For a €70m signing coming off outrageous numbers in the Primeira Liga, it raised more questions than it answered.

There were stretches where Gyokeres failed to dominate games the way he had at Sporting. His place in the XI was not always assured, his status not always that of an undisputed starter. The raw output remained respectable, but the aura of inevitability around his finishing dimmed.

That contrast is exactly what makes him such an intriguing option for Barcelona. Is he the Sporting version waiting to be unlocked again in a different system and league, or the Arsenal version still trying to prove he belongs at the very top of the Premier League?

Barcelona are about to find out how much Arsenal value him after that mixed debut season — and whether a club that invested so heavily just a year ago is prepared to even pick up the phone.

With the window closing in and Atletico Madrid standing firm on Alvarez, the next few days will reveal how desperate Barcelona are for a striker, and which version of Viktor Gyokeres they truly believe in.
