Yael Trepy in Intensive Care After Pool Incident
Cagliari forward Yael Trepy is in intensive care in Sassari after a serious incident in a swimming pool in northern Sardinia, the Serie A club have confirmed.
The 20-year-old Frenchman, who broke into the first team last season, is being treated in hospital after what Italian media have reported was a near-drowning in Porto Cervo on Sunday. Local reports say Trepy swallowed a large quantity of water and had to be rescued, before doctors placed him in a medically induced coma.
“Yael Trepy is currently in intensive care at the hospital in Sassari,” the statement read, with the club stressing it is “in close contact with the medical staff and the player’s family”.
The Sardinian side also appealed for calm and discretion at a highly sensitive moment, adding that it “asks for privacy to be respected and will provide further updates as soon as possible”.
No details have been given by the club on how the incident unfolded, leaving the medical bulletin as the only official information while the squad and staff wait anxiously.
For Cagliari, the news comes just days after what should have been a routine start to their season. On Friday, they edged past Arezzo 1-0 in the Coppa Italia, with Trepy starting the match and playing 54 minutes. It was another small step in a promising rise that has now been abruptly halted.
Trepy, a quick and direct forward, joined Cagliari’s academy in 2022 from Paris-based Union Sportive Creteil. He pushed through the youth ranks to make his Serie A debut and featured eight times in the league last season, scoring once as he began to carve out a role in the senior squad.
Now, instead of talking about his development and next steps on the pitch, Cagliari and the wider Italian game are left hoping for one thing only: that a young career, and more importantly a young life, can resume.
