Arsenal Faces Injury Setback as Christos Tzolis Exits Early for Greece Despite Refusing Substitution

Arsenal must now deal with another injury problem after winger Christos Tzolis suffered a muscular issue while playing for Greece against the Netherlands. The incident occurred early in their Nations League match, leaving manager Mikel Arteta worried about the player's availability ahead of upcoming Premier League fixtures.

Early Exit in Nations League Clash

Tzolis lasted only 18 minutes in the 2-2 draw between Greece and the Netherlands in Thessaloniki. He went down holding his leg and needed immediate attention on the pitch, visibly upset and covering his face with his shirt.

After treatment from the medical staff, Tzolis seemed to move more freely and appeared eager to stay on the field, leading to a rare disagreement with his national team coach.

Substitution Dispute Revealed by Jovanovic

Greece head coach Ivan Jovanovic explained that he quickly ordered the substitution as a precaution, but Tzolis initially refused. Speaking to Sport24, Jovanovic described the unusual exchange.

"How can I handle it, you tell me," said Jovanovic. "I’m his coach, I tell him to come out and he says, ‘I’m not coming out.’ Everyone nearby saw the scene. I told him to get out because I suspected something was wrong."

The coach emphasized that the decision was guided strictly by medical advice, since it was not a competitive fixture.

"A coach doesn’t decide substitutions or judge injuries without consulting doctors. We have very good medical staff. When the doctor and Christos both understood this was not something to continue playing with, I had to act," Jovanovic added. "It was a muscular issue, so I asked for him to come off immediately."

Ongoing Fitness Worries for Arsenal

Eventually, Tzolis complied, briefly returning to defend a corner before heading to the bench. Jovanovic remains hopeful the injury is minor.

"We don’t know the full extent yet, but I hope it’s just a twitch, something temporary," he said.

This incident adds to a tough international break for Arteta's squad. Midfielder Kai Havertz also sustained an injury against the Netherlands, increasing the workload for Arsenal's medical team.

Meanwhile, club captain Martin Odegaard endured a heavy challenge from Portugal’s Bernardo Silva but recovered and was cleared to play against Norway.

Uncertain Road Ahead

Tzolis is likely to miss Greece’s next Nations League game against Germany, pending further medical assessments to understand the severity of his muscular damage. Arsenal will be hoping for positive updates as they prepare for a busy domestic schedule where losing key players could cause problems.
