Barcelona Targets Harry Kane: Successor to Lewandowski or Pipe Dream?

Barcelona have identified their new obsession. With Robert Lewandowski bound for MLS side Chicago Fire, the Catalan club want a new figurehead for their attack, and they have gone straight for the top shelf: Harry Kane.

According to the Daily Mail, Barça have already opened a channel and agreed to revisit the situation once England’s 2026 World Cup campaign is over. The timing is no accident. Kane is 32, at the peak of his powers, and has only one year left on his contract at Bayern Munich. For a club hunting a marquee No 9, the equation is obvious.

The reality is anything but.

Barça’s big swing

Barcelona’s finances are no secret. Every transfer window arrives with the same question: how can they possibly afford it? Yet again, the board is exploring “creative” ways to structure a deal, trying to stretch their resources far enough to tempt one of the game’s elite strikers.

They see Kane as the ideal successor to Lewandowski, the one forward on the market who can guarantee the same volume of goals and act as the focal point in Hansi Flick’s system. This is not a speculative name on a long list. Inside Camp Nou, Kane is viewed as the statement signing.

Bayern, though, are not in the mood to cooperate. The Bundesliga giants remain desperate to keep hold of their talisman, who has taken to life in Germany with frightening ease. The pull of Camp Nou would test any player’s resolve, but Bayern believe the “Bavarian project” still grips their centre-forward.

A cold response from Kane’s camp

For now, the noise from Kane’s side is clear: this will not be simple.

Initial contact from Barcelona was met with a firm response. The report claims Kane’s representatives effectively shut down the conversation after a phone call from the Catalan club, with the player said to be enjoying his football and life in Germany.

That has not scared Barcelona off. Far from it. The club are prepared to “go all out” if even the slightest opening appears once the World Cup in North America is done. They are willing to wait, to push, to test Bayern’s resolve and Kane’s long-term plans.

But at present, the door is barely ajar.

A striker at the peak of his powers

Kane’s form gives Bayern every reason to dig in.

Since moving to Munich, he has been prolific even by his own standards. He has just completed a season in which he scored a staggering 61 goals in 51 games, numbers that would make even Lewandowski raise an eyebrow.

On the international stage, he has climbed another rung on the ladder of England greats. Kane recently became the Three Lions’ all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, hitting 11 goals in the competition. In this tournament alone, he has already struck three times in the group stage and remains central to England’s hopes in the knockout rounds.

The price tag reflects that status. Even with his contract running down and his 33rd birthday on the horizon, Bayern would demand an astronomical fee before they even consider a sale. Legendary output still commands a legendary number.

World Cup first, future later

All of this is unfolding while Kane’s focus lies elsewhere.

England are preparing to face DR Congo in the last 32 in Atlanta, and the captain is locked in on the job at hand. Speaking to BBC Sport about his latest World Cup milestone, Kane said: “The World Cup is the biggest competition we play as professional footballers, so to get to 11 goals is a proud feeling. I just want to enjoy this moment with the team. I never take these moments for granted. Another good milestone to hit, and I hope it is not the last one in this tournament.”

That mindset leaves little room for transfer sagas. Any decision on his club future will wait until England’s fate in North America is sealed. Barcelona know they are dealing with a player who will not be distracted in the middle of a World Cup campaign.

Replacing Lewandowski… again

If Barça somehow manage to break through, the move would carry a curious symmetry. Kane would be replacing Lewandowski for the second time in his career, having already stepped into the Pole’s role at Bayern.

Barcelona believe he is the only realistic option who can replicate Lewandowski’s ruthless numbers in front of goal, a cornerstone of Flick’s tactical blueprint. They want a striker who can finish chances, link play, and carry the burden of expectation that comes with wearing the No 9 at Camp Nou. Kane ticks every box on paper.

The problem is prising him away from a club that built its entire attack around him in a single season and watched him explode.

Plan B in Madrid

Barça, wary of how hard Bayern and Kane might push back, are not betting everything on one card.

They have “multiple irons in the fire” in case the Kane pursuit proves unworkable. One of those is Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez, whose situation has become a talking point across Europe. Reports suggest optimism has grown within Camp Nou after Alvarez’s recent public comments about wanting to leave Atletico.

That has not yet translated into a formal pivot away from Kane, but the outlines are clear. Whether Barcelona chase the England captain or turn their attention fully to the Argentine, the outcome will be the same: a huge financial commitment is required, and the margin for error is thin.

Barcelona know they need a new leader for their attack. The question is whether they can bend the market, and their own finances, far enough to make Harry Kane that man—or whether this pursuit becomes another ambitious chapter in a summer defined by hard choices.
