Bardghji's ACL Injury Derails Barcelona Transfer Plans

Barcelona’s summer plans have been ripped up by a single twist of a knee.

The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that forward Bardghji has suffered a torn ACL in his right leg, a devastating injury that not only rules the 20-year-old out for months but also kills any chance of a transfer before the window shuts on September 1.

A move lined up, a career halted

This was supposed to be the summer of his restart. After talks with club management and a blunt assessment from coach Flick, Bardghji had been preparing to leave Barcelona in search of regular football. The message from the bench was clear: first-team minutes would be scarce in the coming campaign.

Interest was there. Barcelona had already fielded enquiries from across Europe, including from the Premier League, and negotiations were expected to gather pace as the deadline approached. The plan was simple: protect the asset, move him on, let his career breathe elsewhere.

That is why he did not feature in Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese. He was kept out of harm’s way, wrapped in the usual pre-transfer caution.

Then came Monday’s training session.

A familiar nightmare

During that session, Bardghji suffered the severe injury that has now been confirmed as a right ACL tear. Medical tests have ruled that he will require surgery in the coming days, followed by a long and demanding rehabilitation period in Barcelona.

Cruelly, this is not new territory for him. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in the same knee. He first suffered the exact injury while playing for Copenhagen in 2024, a blow that already threatened to derail his rapid rise.

Barcelona brought him in last summer from Copenhagen for around €2 million, a low-risk investment in a high-upside talent. In his debut season in Spain he made 28 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals. The numbers tell a quieter story, though: most of those minutes came from the bench, late cameos rather than leading roles.

And this season was only going to get tougher. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi had pushed him even further down the pecking order. The exit door was not just open; he had been encouraged to walk through it.

Window closed before it opened

Now that door has slammed shut. With the transfer window closing on September 1, the severity of the injury effectively ends any possibility of a move this summer. No club is taking on a long-term knee rehabilitation with the clock ticking on a deal.

Instead of a new league, a new country or a fresh start, Bardghji faces operating theatres, treatment rooms and lonely gym sessions. His season has been rewritten before it began.

He will undergo surgery in the coming days, then remain in Barcelona to begin the long haul back. The focus, for now, is brutally narrow: recover, rebuild, and somehow come back from a second major knee injury before his career has truly had the chance to take off.

For a 20-year-old who had one foot out of the club, the question no longer concerns where he will play next. It’s whether this latest setback becomes a detour in his story, or the defining battle of his early career.
