Bayern Munich's Summer Overhaul: Joao Palhinha on the Move

Bayern Munich are not whispering their intentions this summer. They are spelling them out.

Joao Palhinha, once paraded as a key piece of their midfield, now finds himself on a very public for-sale list. Director of sport Max Eberl has confirmed the Portuguese international is one of three players Bayern are actively looking to move on – and the message could hardly be harsher.

“They have no future at Bayern,” Eberl said via @iMiaSanMia on X, naming Sacha Boey, Joao Palhinha and Bryan Zaragoza. If they stay, he made clear, they will not play a role in the first team. No grey area. No soft landing.

A New Bayern Takes Shape

This ruthlessness comes as Bayern tear into a major squad rebuild.

Ismael Saibari has arrived from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth around €50m (£43m), a signing that underlines the club’s intent to refresh the core of their midfield. Nathaniel Brown, snapped up from Eintracht Frankfurt for €55m (£47m) after interest from Manchester United, further shifts the balance of the dressing room.

Leon Goretzka and Raphael Guerreiro have already gone at the end of their contracts. Now the clear-out continues, and the hierarchy has decided that Boey, Palhinha and Zaragoza are on the wrong side of the reset.

The pressure on squad places has been turned up. For those three, the door is open – but it leads out of Munich, not into the Allianz Arena.

From Title Winner to Spare Part

Palhinha’s situation is particularly stark given how quickly the story has turned.

He joined Bayern in July 2024 after two outstanding seasons at Fulham, where his combative, ball-winning style had made him one of the Premier League’s standout defensive midfielders. In Germany, he helped the club secure the Bundesliga title that season, seemingly validating the transfer.

Then the minutes dried up.

Across all competitions he logged just 986 minutes. Not enough rhythm, not enough trust, and certainly not the central role he had enjoyed in London. For a 31-year-old in his prime, that kind of peripheral status was never going to be sustainable.

So he went back to what he knew best: England.

Spurs Loan Revives His Reputation

Tottenham took him on a season-long loan, and Palhinha responded exactly as a seasoned Premier League midfielder should.

He played regularly in north London and delivered when it mattered most, scoring a crucial final-day winner against Everton that secured Spurs’ top-flight status. It was the kind of contribution that usually forces a club’s hand on a purchase option.

But Tottenham went another way.

The £26m clause expired untouched, Spurs instead pouring a combined £185m into Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali to reshape their midfield. Palhinha left with his reputation enhanced but his future unresolved.

He returns to Bayern to find the door effectively bolted from the inside.

England Calling Again?

For now, Palhinha stands in limbo: under contract in Munich, unwanted by the club, and waiting for the next move. The market, though, is not ignoring him.

The Portuguese midfielder is keen to remain in England, where his body of work at Fulham and Spurs still carries weight. Aston Villa have been in direct talks over a deal, sensing an opportunity to add a proven Premier League destroyer to Unai Emery’s options.

Newcastle are also monitoring the situation as they prepare for life without Bruno Guimaraes, who is heading to Arsenal. For a side that relies heavily on intensity and structure in midfield, Palhinha’s profile fits the brief: disciplined, aggressive, and reliable in front of the back line.

Bayern have made their stance brutally clear. Palhinha will not be part of their next chapter. The only question now is which English club decides his experience, and his edge, are exactly what their own story is missing.
