Benfica Sets High Price for Pavlidis Amid Barcelona's Striker Search

Barcelona’s search for a centre-forward has reached Lisbon, but Benfica have made one thing brutally clear: Vangelis Pavlidis leaves only for an offer they simply cannot refuse.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the Portuguese giants are not entertaining the idea of a routine sale. Pavlidis is on a growing shortlist at Barcelona as the Catalan club scramble for an alternative to their primary target, Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez. That list has expanded quickly after Atletico escalated tensions, filing an official complaint to FIFA and accusing Barça of harassment over their pursuit of the Argentine.

In that swirl of names and negotiations, Pavlidis has emerged as a serious option. At 27, the Greek international offers the profile Barcelona want: penalty-box presence, experience, and a proven eye for goal. But Benfica’s stance is icy. The board, the report stresses, consider any departure highly unlikely. Unless a bid arrives that blows them away, their top scorer stays put.

As of late July, no such bid had landed. In fact, no official offer of any kind had reached the Estádio da Luz for Pavlidis, despite the noise around him and the late-window urgency from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Behind the scenes, the story has been far more turbulent for the player himself. Portuguese outlet A Bola, which is well plugged into Benfica’s hierarchy, reported that Pavlidis left for his summer break anxious and frustrated. He suspected the club were ready to cash in on him, using his sale to plug the financial hole left by failing to qualify for the Champions League.

Those fears did not come out of nowhere. Between February and May, Pavlidis endured a barren spell, managing just three goals. For a leading striker at a club of Benfica’s size, such a drought can quickly turn into a question mark over status and future. Doubts grew. So did the tension.

Then the goals returned.

In the preliminary round of the Europa League, Pavlidis hit four times, a surge that changed the mood around him almost overnight. The same forward who had gone on holiday wondering if he was being pushed towards the exit suddenly looked like a man Benfica could not afford to lose. His form has strengthened the club’s resolve: if anyone wants him now, they will have to pay at the very top of the market.

Juventus have already tested those waters. As reported in the same cluster of stories, the Italian club made an enquiry earlier in the window, exploring the possibility of bringing Pavlidis to Turin. Benfica’s response was blunt. The price: 40 million euros. Juventus walked away.

That figure now hangs over every conversation about the Greek striker. For Barcelona, wrestling with financial constraints and a complex forward search, it is a serious obstacle. For Benfica, it is the line in the sand.

The window is ticking down, the need for goals at the Camp Nou is rising, and Pavlidis is scoring again. Someone will have to blink.
