Bordeaux's Historic Fall to Sixth Tier Confirmed by Paris Court
The verdict has dropped, and it is brutal for one of French football’s great names. The Paris Administrative Court has upheld the sanction imposed by the French Football Federation (FFF) on Girondins de Bordeaux, confirming the club’s definitive exclusion from the national championships and sending it down to Régional 1, the sixth tier of the pyramid.
For a club with European nights, titles and legends in its history, the drop is not just a relegation. It is an eviction from the professional game.
A rescue plan that came too late
The decision follows the bankruptcy proceedings opened in 2024 and the formal loss of professional status. Bordeaux’s last lifeline had seemed to arrive with a change of hands: owner Gérard López sold his shares to Sparta Capital for a symbolic one euro, and the investment firm laid out an ambitious plan.
On paper, it sounded like a way back. Sparta Capital pledged an investment of 10.6 million euros to settle part of the club’s debts and try to stabilise the finances that had been spiralling for years.
The court did not bend. The judges backed the disciplinary measure taken by the FFF, ruling that the sanction would stand despite the proposed injection of funds and the change in ownership structure. The historic badge carried no legal weight.
Bordeaux pushed into the unknown
The consequence is stark. Girondins de Bordeaux, six-time French champions and twice winners of the Coupe de France, must now restart from the amateur ranks in Régional 1. The club will be completely outside the professional divisions for the 2026–2027 season.
This is not a simple sporting setback. It is a reset. New owners, new level, new reality.
From packed European nights to regional pitches, Bordeaux now face a long, uncertain climb. The question is no longer how high they can finish in Ligue 1, but how long it will take just to get back into the national spotlight at all.
