Canadian Fans Claim Qatar’s Free World Cup Tickets Ahead of Key Match in Vancouver
Qatar’s Free World Cup Tickets Snapped Up by Canadian Supporters
Canadian fans have managed to get hold of some free World Cup tickets originally provided by Qatar. As Qatar prepares to face Canada in a crucial Group B match this Thursday in Vancouver, fewer Qatar supporters might show up due to this unusual ticket situation.
The Qatar Football Association joined forces with their government to fund travel for about 1,000 fans from the Middle East to attend World Cup matches in North America. This included chartering three flights via Qatar Airways to San Francisco for their opening 1–1 draw against Switzerland. But bringing fans to Canada while keeping tickets fully funded has proven difficult.
Qatar’s fans could enter a lottery to secure a spot on these flights, with 800 having their travel and hotel costs covered. Meanwhile, many tickets ended up available across North America through social media ads.
Sports Illustrated revealed that Canadian supporters exploited a weak system to claim these tickets. To obtain tickets, people registered on the Qatar FA website, providing FIFA ticket account details plus their name, address, email, and the Arab country they identified with. The only requirement was claiming an Arab nationality, but no verification stopped anyone from selecting any country—even without real ties.
“I just decided to sign up, said I was Arab, and chose my family’s country,” shared one fan who wished to remain anonymous for fear of losing the ticket. “They didn’t ask for proof or birth certificates—just a claim and a chosen country.”
Sources say over 150 fans supporting Canada, often wearing Canadian jerseys, secured these free tickets. The usual cheapest tickets outside this offer were $80, mainly sold to Canadian supporter group members known as The Voyageurs.
Those lucky enough to get Qatar’s free tickets received official Qatar merchandise for the match, but the Canadians are expected to fill the stands in full national colors, hoping to see their team win its first-ever men’s World Cup game after earning a point in Toronto with a 1–1 draw.
“There will be some real Qatar fans and Arabs cheering for the team,” the anonymous fan said, “but mostly I think it’ll be Canadians.”
Attempts to get comments from Qatar’s FA and media representatives went unanswered before publication.
Qatar Fans Present at First Match, Attendance Policies Differ
Qatar supporters turned out strongly for the opening game against Switzerland. Photos showed them marching through San Francisco streets. SFGate reported attendance was mandatory for fans staying at San Francisco hotels but optional for those in Santa Clara near Levi’s Stadium.
In Vancouver, Qatar’s Ambassador to Canada, Tariq Ali Faraj Al Ansari, confirmed that all logistical support for the team and traveling fans had been arranged.
Hundreds of Qatar fans are still expected to attend Thursday’s critical Group B clash, though many seats will be filled by Canadian supporters. Both teams face pressure to secure a victory, as the winner will greatly improve their chances of advancing and possibly topping the group by the final round.
