St Patrick's Athletic Stuns Shamrock Rovers in FAI Cup Comeback
Teenager Sam Rooney struck in extra-time as St Patrick's Athletic roared back from 2-0 down to dump Club Orange FAI Cup holders Shamrock Rovers out in a pulsating third-round tie at Richmond Park.
Rovers looked in complete control at the break. Jonathan Afolabi and Michael Noonan both found the net, punishing a Saints side that had created more but failed to take their chances. The visitors carried the swagger of champions, two goals to the good and seemingly cruising.
St Pat's refused to fold.
Luke Turner ignited the comeback, pulling one back to rattle the holders and drag the home crowd back into the contest. The noise rose, the tackles bit harder, and Rovers, so assured in the first half, suddenly looked unsure.
Then came the flashpoint. Deep into stoppage time, St Pat's were awarded a controversial penalty when Aidan Keena went down in the box. Rovers protested furiously, but the decision stood. Keena took responsibility, drilled his spot-kick low, and watched as Ed McGinty almost produced the save of the tie, getting agonisingly close before the ball found the net.
From 2-0 down to 2-2 at the death. Extra-time felt inevitable. So did the shift in momentum.
Early in the first period, 17-year-old Rooney seized his moment. The teenager kept his composure and finished what proved to be the winner, capping a remarkable turnaround and sending Richmond Park into chaos.
Rovers, who began the afternoon as defending champions, ended it out of the cup and staring at the end of a miserable week. St Pat's walked off the pitch with a statement comeback and a new teenage hero.
