Carlos Queiroz Returns as Ghana Head Coach Weeks After Resignation

Carlos Queiroz has made a surprising comeback as the head coach of Ghana less than two months after stepping down. The 73-year-old initially left his post following the Black Stars’ exit from the World Cup, but he is now set to lead the team again during the upcoming international window.

Brief First Tenure Ends Abruptly

Queiroz's first stint with Ghana lasted under three months. He was brought in April to replace Otto Addo, who had been dismissed. Despite his initial resignation in July, citing the end of his journey with the national team, Queiroz’s return was unexpected and swift.

Support from Ghana Football Association

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) officially confirmed that Queiroz accepted a new coaching contract. The GFA stated they have full faith in his experience and leadership to move the Black Stars forward after a period of uncertainty.

A Globally Experienced Coach

Queiroz has managed nine different national teams, including Iran during three World Cups and Portugal, whom he led to the round of 16 in 2010. Other countries under his guidance include South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Colombia, Egypt, Qatar, and Oman.

During his brief first term with Ghana, he led the team to a dramatic 1-0 group-stage victory over Panama, secured by a late goal from Caleb Yirenkyi. Ghana also earned a 0-0 draw against England but suffered a 2-1 loss to Croatia.

At club level, Queiroz worked closely with Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, contributing to three Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League win. He also managed Real Madrid for the 2003-04 season.

Immediate Resumption of Duties

Queiroz won’t wait long before returning to the sidelines. The GFA announced his new coaching role starts during September’s international window. The Black Stars aim to reintegrate his tactical approach as they regroup post-World Cup. His task includes stabilizing the squad and preparing the team for upcoming fixtures, including crucial qualifiers.
