Celtic's Last-Gasp Penalty Keeps Title Race Alive
Celtic dragged the Scottish title race into a final‑day shootout with a breathless 3-2 win at Motherwell, sealed by a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
Fir Park had already seen enough drama for a month. It got one more twist.
Late Chaos at Fir Park
Celtic arrived in Lanarkshire knowing anything less than victory would hand Hearts a clear advantage in the run-in. Instead of a routine night, they were dragged into a scrap.
Motherwell struck first, rattling the four-time defending champions and briefly tilting the title towards Edinburgh. Celtic responded, turned the game on its head, and moved 2-1 in front, seemingly back in control and on course to keep the pressure on.
Then came the 85th minute.
Liam Gordon rose to make it 2-2, a goal that reverberated well beyond Fir Park. At that moment, the arithmetic turned brutal for Celtic: they would not only have to beat Hearts on the final day, they would need to do it by at least three goals to snatch the title on goals scored.
The mood shifted. From tension to near despair in the away end. Hearts, cruising elsewhere, could almost touch the trophy.
Iheanacho Keeps the Champions Alive
But the champions refused to let go.
Deep into stoppage time, with the clock already beyond the 98-minute mark, Celtic forced one last moment of jeopardy in the Motherwell box. The decision went their way. Kelechi Iheanacho stepped up with the season hanging on his right boot.
He buried it.
The 3-2 win did more than salvage two extra points. It rewrote the script for Saturday.
That single strike means Celtic, chasing a fifth straight crown, now know exactly what they need: beat Hearts at Celtic Park and the trophy stays in Glasgow. No goal difference calculations. No elaborate permutations. Just a straight shootout on home turf.
Hearts Hold the Edge – For Now
Hearts did their part, beating Falkirk 3-0 to stay one point clear at the top. On paper, they remain in control. A draw on Saturday will be enough to finish in front and end a title wait stretching back to 1960.
This is not just about a championship. Hearts are trying to smash a duopoly that has defined Scottish football for decades. Not since Aberdeen in 1985 has anyone other than Celtic or Rangers lifted the league trophy.
For most of the night, it looked like the door was finally swinging open for them. Gordon’s late leveller at Fir Park appeared to push it wide. Iheanacho’s penalty slammed it back on the latch.
So it comes to this: first against second, one point between them, at a packed Celtic Park with history on both sides of the divide.
Ninety minutes to decide whether Hearts can break an era of dominance, or whether Celtic, dragged to the brink at Motherwell, will find one last performance to keep their grip on the crown.
