Chelsea’s Midfield Struggles Highlighted Despite £349m Summer Spend
In Sunday’s 2-1 loss to champions Arsenal, Chelsea ended the match with two players who originally started as right-backs positioned together in midfield. Despite splashing out £349 million during the summer transfer window, the Blues found themselves short in central midfield options.
The crucial moment came when Reece James, who transitioned from right-back to midfield last season, missed his marker Martin Odegaard, allowing Arsenal’s captain to score the winning goal at the Emirates Stadium. Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso had expressed confidence that James could develop into one of the world’s top midfielders, and James did show strong performances overall, spending nearly half of last season in midfield roles.
Yet, the substitution of midfielder Romeo Lavia for defender Malo Gusto in the second half highlighted Chelsea’s shallow midfield depth. Their lack of creativity on the bench contrasted with Arsenal’s substitutes who helped steer the hosts to victory. Chelsea’s game plan involved sitting back and inviting pressure but still left gaps between the lines that Arsenal exploited.
"Chelsea don’t have European football this season, so they’re playing fewer matches and can focus on the Premier League. But it’s worrying that you finish a game against the champions with two right-backs in midfield," said Ashley Young to BBC Sport.
"Lavia was injured a lot last season. The frontline will scare teams, but behind that, the midfield is filled by right-backs. Opponents will notice Chelsea’s defensive shape but also the spaces Arsenal found," Young added.
Why Chelsea’s Midfield Looks Thin
The biggest problem is the absence of key midfielder Moises Caicedo. The Ecuadorian suffered an injury just 11 minutes into a substitute appearance against Brighton last week, sidelining him indefinitely. Before this, Caicedo had been remarkably consistent, missing only two games over the past three seasons due to minor issues.
Alonso admitted to concerns about rushing Caicedo back too soon after last week's setback, signaling caution moving forward. It remains unclear if fitness worries influenced Chelsea’s aggressive pursuit of midfield reinforcements on transfer deadline day.
Chelsea attempted a £47 million signing of Lamine Camara from Monaco, which collapsed at the last moment, frustrating Stamford Bridge officials. Earlier, bids up to £64 million for Bournemouth’s Alex Scott were rejected, and a deal for France’s Manu Kone was blocked by Roma’s coach.
The club claimed Camara was a market opportunity and expressed satisfaction with their summer dealings, maintaining faith in the current squad despite selling Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for a British-record joint fee of £125 million on deadline day, without bringing in a direct replacement.
With Caicedo injured and veteran Jordan Henderson still out recovering from a broken arm sustained during the World Cup, midfield options are stretched. New signing Valentin Barco has yet to be given a Premier League start, while Gusto, naturally a defender, has been chosen ahead of midfielders in all three league games so far.
When Gusto played in midfield, Chelsea’s possession dropped to 25.6% during their recent 4-3 win over Brighton, marking their lowest since records began in 2003-04. Alonso insists the squad should manage the season’s demands without European fixtures if all midfielders return to fitness.
The Blues have relied heavily on attacking talents like Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer, and Joao Pedro through their opening matches. Still, conceding seven goals in three games has raised defensive concerns. Alonso emphasized the need for tighter performances.
Alonso Remains Hopeful Amid Challenges
Despite the defeat, there were positives. Record signing Morgan Rogers scored early, becoming the first Chelsea player since Eden Hazard in 2018-19 to either score or assist in each of the club’s first three Premier League games of a season.
This was arguably one of Chelsea’s stronger displays against Arsenal during a streak of ten games without a win against their London rivals. Yet, Chelsea remain 33 points behind Arsenal after finishing 10th last season.
"We came to win and knew we weren’t far off, but it went their way. It hurts, we’re disappointed, but this is just the first loss. It won’t impact our mood or mindset," Alonso said post-match.
Arsenal continue to set the benchmark both in London and across the Premier League. Even though Chelsea secured Rogers before Arsenal, the Blues still trail the title holders. Their failure to sign a midfielder after selling Fernandez may prove a vulnerability.
Alonso described the summer as 'phase one' of rebuilding. If Caicedo’s recovery does not resolve midfield struggles, Chelsea might face pressure to revisit the transfer market in January.
